
Graduate Scholarships
2009-2010 Academic Year
Bridgewater State College offers a number of scholarships for students pursuing graduate study. Applications will be available in September 2009. Following is a list of scholarships available to Bridgewater State College graduate students:
The application below is due to the School of Graduate Studies in the Maxwell Library by November 17, 2009. Scholarship recipient(s) will be announced in January 2010.
· The Dr. Mary Lou Thornburg Graduate Student Professional Development Scholarship Fund was established in 2006. This scholarship is awarded by a committee consisting of the chairperson of the Department of Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies, the graduate coordinators of Physical Education/Health and Athletic Training, and a member of the School of Graduate Studies to benefit Bridgewater State College graduate student(s) enrolled in the Athletic Training, Health Promotion, or Physical Education programs to defray research and/or conference travel expenses.
Amount of Award: $900.00 Application

Scholarship recipients will be announced in
May 2010.
· The Paul Wright Scholarship Fund for Graduate Education was established in December of 2003 to honor and recognize Paul Wright, former associate dean of Graduate and Continuing Education. The scholarship is awarded by the dean of the School of Graduate Studies in consultation with the vice president of External Affairs and the Graduate Scholarship Committee to benefit a graduate student accepted by Bridgewater State College. Award criteria includes a commitment to graduate studies and academic excellence including a minimum GPA of 3.8, completion of at least six (6) graduate credits, and demonstrated leadership roles in the community and college life.
Amount of Award: $900.00 Application
· The Class of 1955 Graduate Scholarship Fund was formed to benefit Bridgewater State College undergraduate students who have been accepted into a Master of Education (MEd) graduate program at the college. Recipients must demonstrate financial need, be enrolled as full-time students, and be making satisfactory progress toward a graduate degree. The scholarship is awarded by the dean of the School of Graduate Studies and the Graduate Scholarship Committee. In addition to a completed application, candidates must also submit official graduate and/or undergraduate transcripts and two letters of recommendation from academic sources.
Amount of Award: $2,400.00 Application
· The Bridgewater State College Alumni Association (BAA) Graduate Scholarship Fund was established by the BSC Alumni Association to benefit Bridgewater State College graduate students who have been accepted into a master's degree program at the college. Recipients must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) graduate credits per semester. Award criteria include a minimum GPA of 3.2 as an undergraduate student and demonstrated financial need. The selection of recipients will be the responsibility of the Graduate Scholarship Committee. In addition to a completed application, candidates must also submit official undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts, a 150-word statement of purpose, and two letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic sources.

The Peter J. Mazzaferro Graduate Scholarship Fund was established in
2005 to honor and recognize Peter J. Mazzaferro, associate professor
emeritus of education and head football coach at Bridgewater State College
for 36 years. This scholarship will benefit a Bridgewater State College
undergraduate who played football for two - four years at Bridgewater State
College. The recipient must be accepted into a master's degree program at
Bridgewater State College and have no remaining athletic eligibility. The
scholarship is awarded by the dean of the School of Graduate Studies and the
Graduate Scholarship Committee. In addition to a completed application,
candidates must also submit official graduate and/or undergraduate
transcripts and one letter of recommendation from an academic source.

Application
· The Elsie Golush Frank Fund for Social Work was established by the Frank family in 2006 to benefit a Bridgewater State College graduate student with financial need and enrolled in the Master of Social Work program. The scholarship is awarded by a committee comprised of a representative from the Frank family and from the BSC Master of Social Work program. Will not be available this year.

The
Eleise B. Doran Scholarship Fund was established to benefit the
education of a deserving and qualified bachelor's degree graduate of
Bridgewater State College who is pursuing a Master's Degree in Education
(MEd). In addition to a completed application, candidates must also submit
official graduate and/or undergraduate transcripts, a resume, and two
letters of recommendation from academic sources.

Application
· The Dr. Marilyn White Barry, '58, Graduate Award for Academic Excellence was established in 2007 in honor of Dr. Marilyn White Barry, former dean of the Graduate School at Bridgewater State College. This award is given to a Bridgewater State College undergraduate student or alumnus who has achieved high academic standing with a 3.0 or above and is enrolled in a graduate program at the college. The award will be given annually in perpetuity by the donor and falls under the college's annual fund. In addition to a completed application, candidates must submit official graduate and/or undergraduate transcripts. The scholarship is awarded by the dean of the School of Graduate Studies and the Graduate Scholarship Committee. This is a one-time per student award and is not renewable.
Amount of Award: $7,000.00 Application
The
Damon Fund for Graduate Counselor Education was established in 2009.
This scholarship is awarded by a committee consisting of the chairperson
and graduate program coordinator of the Department of
Counselor Education, and the Graduate School Scholarship Committee.
This scholarship will benefit a graduate student who is matriculated and
working successfully toward a degree in the area of Counselor Education,
i.e., School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling (school based) or
Student Affairs Counseling. Preference will be given to a
student who demonstrates financial need.
Amount of Award: $1,000.00
Application
· The Founders Award is a research award presented annually to a graduate student by the Women's and Gender Studies program. The research can include essays, short stories or poetry drawn from work either previously written or newly crafted. Submissions should reflect on gender in its broadest sense: roles and statuses of men and women, sexuality, and the intersections of gender, race and class. Submissions should be accompanied by an explanatory letter detailing the contribution of the submission toward understanding and reflecting on gender, and why the project merits the award. All submissions must be sent to Dr. Sarah Wiggins, coordinator of the Women's and Gender Studies program, Tillinghast Hall, room 219. Amount of Award: $200.00

The Louis Carmel Stearns Scholarship Award is presented annually in
memory of Louis Carmel Stearns by his daughter, Mrs. Miriam Stearns
Houghton. Professor Stearns, curator of the college gardens and greenhouse
beside what is now the Conant Science Building, introduced the course,
Gardening I, into the Normal School curriculum around 1908. This was the
first biology course on what is now the BSC campus. Graduate students may
apply for this award after they have completed two 500-level courses from
the biology core. The awarding of the scholarship will be based upon overall
academic excellence; demonstrated interest, effort and perseverance in the
field of biology; and financial need. Applications are confidential and will
be seen only by the faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences.

Other Financial Opportunities:
Please note: Post-Baccalaureate students are not eligible for the TEACH Grant at Bridgewater State College. The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is awarded to a student who is completing, or who intends to complete, coursework that is necessary to begin a career in teaching, and who agrees to serve for at least four years as a full-time, highly qualified teacher in a high-need subject area at a low-income school area (please refer to the TEACH Fact Sheet at https://teach-ats.ed.gov/ats/index.action). Graduate TEACH Grants are for a maximum of $8,000 per student for a master's degree. If the student does not complete the required four years of teaching within eight years after completing the course of study for which the TEACH Grant was received, or otherwise does not meet the eligibility requirements of the TEACH Grant Program, the full amount of the TEACH Grant that the student received will be converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan that the student must repay to the U.S. Department of Education with interest accrued from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement.
