Special Education and Communication Disorders

Program Overview

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders offers programs designed to meet the interests of undergraduate and graduate students who wish to have careers working with individuals with special needs.

Undergraduate Education in Special Education:

The department offers programs designed to meet the needs of undergraduate students who are interested in obtaining Massachusetts initial licensure as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (Pre K-8 grade) or (5-12 grade) or as a Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities (all levels). This also includes a five year Dual Licensure program leading to initial licensure in both elementary education and special education and a masters degree (M.Ed.) in Special Education.

Undergraduate Minor in Special Education:

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders offers two minors designed to meet the interests of undergraduate students who have an interest in students with special needs.

    ◦ Inclusive Practices (for those who have an interest in students with special needs)

    ◦ Professional Practices ( for those who may wish to be licensed to teach students with special needs)

Graduate Education in Special Education:

The department offers programs designed to meet the needs of graduate students who are interested in obtaining Massachusetts initial licensure as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (Pre K-8 grade) or (5-12 grade) or as a Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities (all levels). The program also offers master degrees in special education and programs to meet Massachusetts professional licensure. Additionally, coursework in special education may be used to meet professional development goals.

The special education licensure program at Bridgewater State University meets all Massachusetts Department of Education licensure requirements, and standards established by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

Undergraduate Education in Communication Disorders:

The department offers an undergraduate pre-professional concentration in Communication Disorders for those students who wish to pursue an education in speech-language pathology or audiology. The program provides students with the prerequisite information pertaining to the scope and practice of the profession, normal developmental processes of communication, disorders of communication, and clinical aspects of the profession in accordance with undergraduate curriculum requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Students may follow two tracts: a non-practicum tract which allows the student to complete the concentration requirements in two full years of study, or, a practicum tract which allows qualified students to participate in clinical practicum experience during their senior year in the BSU Speech-Language-Hearing Center. Students, upon their successful completion of the program, are prepared to apply for graduate study at any of the ASHA accredited graduate programs throughout the United States.
