Stephanie Alves is a criminal justice major who is immersed in her field of study beyond the classroom. She is the president of the Criminal Justice Student Organization, serving formerly as its treasurer. The recipient of an Adrian Tinsley undergraduate research grant, Stephanie was the lead researcher on an extensive research project that studied Cape Verdean immigrants and their attitudes toward Brockton police, and is under contract with Mellen Publications to publish a book based on her findings. She was recognized in the Hall of Black Achievers for her academic diligence, campus involvement and community service work. Stephanie has seized opportunities for higher learning through her study abroad experiences in London where she compared its criminal justice system to that of the US and to Cape Verde where she met the President, as well as participating in the Alternatives to Violence Project where she got first-hand experience about the life of prison inmates. The former experience inspired her to organize a book donation on campus to benefit the Old Colony Correctional Center. Stephanie looks forward to forging a career as a future immigration lawyer.

Zachary Bates is a scholar athlete who is in the BSU Honors Program majoring in economics and captain of the Men's Wrestling Team.  Zachary is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the economics honor society and selected to the MASCAC All Academic Team for the past 4 years. He is a leader and peer mentor who runs mandatory study halls while the team is in season and participates on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to ensure the voice of the Wrestling team is heard. He was  named to the National Wrestling Coaches Academic All American Team and as the Pilgrim Wrestling League Wrestler of the Year, and selected to compete in the NCAA Division III national tournament. Zachary volunteers in his community by participating in the Boston Breast Cancer Walk, organizing a Headlock for Hunger food drive for local pantries and coaching with the Franklin County Wrestling Club where he shares his passion with young wrestlers for both the sport and the importance of getting a college education.

William Buckley majors in history and philosophy with a minor in English. His academic work in his major has been recognized through his participation in the Departmental Honors Program in history. William is a member of the Philosophy Club promoting philosophical discussion on campus. His interest in politics is demonstrated through his internships with the committees to elect Jim Timilty to state senator and Stan Nacewice to representative of 9th Norfolk District. On Timilty's committee, William served as field director and deputy campaign manager. Buckley was recognized as the youngest person in Walpole town history to be elected to the Walpole Representative Town Meeting in 2006 and the Walpole School Committee in 2009, and the youngest in the state to serve on the Walpole Democratic Town Committee. He is also a Grand Knight (President) for the Walpole Council within the Walpole Knights of Columbus organization. Buckley's commitment to serving the public in office is widespread in his local community and is sure to grow beyond.

Aubree Buyny is a psychology major with a minor in special education. She excels academically and was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education. Aubree has had a great influence in the Greek community, both as a member and a leader. She has held many leadership positions as a committed 4 year member of Gamma Phi Beta and is the president of   the Pan-Hellenic Association, a governing body for all sororities on campus that she has served for 3 years. In her sophomore year Aubree participated in the Greek Leadership and Development program, an eight week program to hone leadership skills. Being named Greek Woman of the Year in 2010 is a testament to her accomplishments and the positive influence she has on Greek life at BSU. Aubree also has a great presence in BSU community outside of Greek life. She is a resident assistant who was promoted to a senior position in her second year, a family orientation leader and a summer intern for the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership. Aubree's involvement and influence has shaped her into an avid learner and strong leader.

 Julie Clerc, a communications major with a management minor, has had a rich experience while at BSU. The 2 year captain of the Women's Volleyball Team, Julie has been an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Bear TRACKS, and a peer mentor.  During her career as a volleyball player at BSU, Julie set the record for most career kills, 1055, and most career digs, 1174.  She was also named to the All Conference Team this year. As a student-athlete leader in athletics, Julie was a member of the Compliance Committee and the selection committee to hire a Women's Volleyball coach. When she is not on the volleyball court, Julie can be found working as a student building manager at the Adrian Tinsley Center, or volunteering her time to help in the community. Since freshmen year, Julie has donated her time with the Children's Physical Developmental Clinic, Breast Cancer Walk, MS Walk, Kids Day, Special Olympics Aquatics meet, and she is a pen pal with an elementary school child. To gain practical experience in her major, Julie has worked with Well Wed Magazine, the University's Office of Conference and Events and presently with the Italian Home for Children where her primary duties are marketing and promotion.

 

Melani Gerenia is a double major in psychology and biology. She has taken advantage of many opportunities at Bridgewater from a Cambodia Study Tour where she helped rural villages gain access to clean water, to serving as a Student Orientation Coordinator where she helped to coordinate the 2010 Orientation programs for all new students. Melani was also active in Phi Sigma Sigma sorority and held several leadership positions in that organization including scholarship chair. Melani served as the Vice President of the Panhellenic Association where she helped to oversee the formal recruitment process for the BSU sororities and  to start the process of expansion, which led to a new sorority coming to Bridgewater. Melani found that her involvement in campus life enabled her to develop her own leadership style and the opportunity to mentor other rising leaders. Melani looks forward to having her own holistic medicine practice in the future.

Augusto Goncalves is a political science major who participates in the Honors Program and a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honors society.  Augusto participated in two opportunities to study abroad in Jordan and traveled to Belize on an alternative winter break service trip last year. He participated in the Job Shadow program, working with the chief medical examiner's office and the Department of Industrial  Accidents in Boston. The list of Augusto's leadership experiences is long and impressive.  He is the vice-president of STAND (Student Anti-Genocide Coalition), the president of the Middle Eastern Cultural Connection Association, and formerly a member of the E-board for Free the Children and Cape Verdean Student Association. He is an active member of Men Integrated in Brotherhood, La Sociedad Latina, the African American Society and the Commuter Student Association. Augusto was a mentor for the FAM for Change (Friends and Mentors for Change), a program that partners BSU students with at-risk teens from Brockton High School and a senator in the Student Government Association.

Ginaya Greene is a communication studies major who has been on the Dean's List every semester since her freshmen year and is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society. With the support of an Adrian Tinsley Undergraduate Research grant, she conducted research on corporate sustainability and served as the team leader at the BSU Research Symposium in 2010 where she presented the study. Ginaya was very active as a Junior Staff Counselor at the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club and for two years received the club's Member Recognition Award. Formerly, Ginaya was the meeting and task coordinator for Keystone Peer-Leadership Group and a group leader for Any-Town Leadership Program. On-campus, she was treasurer and director of social media for the Public Relations Student Society of America.

Elizabeth Guardia is a sociology major and Dean's List student who participated with a group that conducted research for UNESCO Old World Heritage Project in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia and later wrote an article that was presented at the Midwestern Sociological Conference in Chicago. She is a Landmark Leadership Conference graduate, and a member of United Chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society. Elizabeth has served as a judge in the elementary-aged geography competition for three years, and most importantly, has been a lead ambassador for the Burundi Young Ambassadors program in charge of recruiting and training new members and organizing agricultural and sustainability workshops. She has been invited to go to Burundi to work with the nation in human development needs. For community service, Elizabeth has been involved in helping feed the homeless at the Father Bill's Mainspring House in Brockton, worked on cleaning up invasive plant species along MA DCR trails as a Trails Clean Up volunteer, and has organized locations and instructors for Classes in a Community yoga program that provides free yoga classes to locals in the Dedham and Roxbury communities.

Kelly Harrington is a biology major with a concentration in ecological biology. She has received various honors and is a member of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society, serving as the society's vice president. She has performed research into the apoptotic cascade through the Undergraduate Research program, and has trained incoming researchers in lab techniques. She has been vice president of Tri Beta national honor society and worked at the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole where she performed research on cuttlefish, and gave poster and oral presentations at a symposia. She has received two Tinsley grants and the Professor Louis Carmel Stearns Memorial Scholarship. As a member of the Biology Club for three years, Kelly helped raise money for water filters for Cambodia and assisted in planning school wide events. She is active in the Student Organization for Undergraduate Research and has helped students preparing for ATP symposium to create their posters and present their research. Off-campus, Kelly is an assistant coach for the Brockton Youth Softball League.

Kelly Harvey is a psychology major and sociology minor and has been part of the BSU Honors Program. Throughout her BSU career, Kelly has participated in numerous community service projects including Relay for Life, Good Neighbors Day, the Fairy Godmother Project, Halloween for Hunger and FAM for Change. Kelly has also been an Orientation Leader, participated in the Leadership Institute, been a member of the National Residence Hall Honorary and worked as a Student Program Advisor helping clubs and organizations plan events. Kelly has been a dedicated member of Program Committee, including three years as a member of that organization's leadership. Through her involvement with PC, she also represented BSU at three different conference of the National Association for Campus Activities where she was able to present on some of her own leadership experiences. Kelly is currently looking to pursue a career in student affairs in order to help others grow, learn and develop in the ways she was able to here at Bridgewater.
Chelsea Horrocks is a criminal justice and psychology major who participates in the Honor's Program. She is a member of the Student Organization for Undergraduate Research, herself a recipient of an Adrian Tinsley Summer Research Grant who promotes the opportunity for students to engage in research at BSU.  She has completed the history of prostitution and an honors thesis on unwanted sexual experiences on campus and presented her research at annual meetings for the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. The recipient of the Spirit of Service Award in 2010,  Chelsea's passion to engage in community service is evident through her involvement with the Community Service Center as a volunteer programs assistant and community advocate on poverty, responsible for coordinating with community partners and organizing volunteers to participate in off campus service events. Chelsea has committed her winter and spring breaks to engage in service through the program, "Take a Break and Make A Difference", which provided her an opportunity to volunteer in a poor, rural area of Honduras. 

Kayo Ichimura is a communication studies from Japan who immerses herself in learning experiences beyond the classroom by integrating her course work and Japanese culture. She works at the Moakley TV studio and was a public relations interns at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center Studio. Through the support of an Adrian Tinsley Program for Undergraduate Research, she performed a study on public relations strategies to educate students on the greenhouse gas inventory.  She shares her knowledge of the Japanese language by volunteering as a conversation partner in the Modern History of Japan course and as a tutor to students studying the Japanese language. She volunteered to be an interpreter for the International Sister Exchange Program, a connection with the university's sister city of Ina City, Japan.  Kayo has participated in productions of the "Vagina Monologues", was the secretary of the Recycling Club and  is an active member, and treasurer, of the International and Exchange Club. She has participated in International Education Week and the Japanese Festival at BSU. Kayo has also been engaged in community service programs at the university including a service trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast through Habitat for Humanity and Earth Day projects.

 

Julia LaMotte is a psychology major in the Honors Program who excels in scholarship and as leader in the university community. She studied in Canada as a Killam Fellow and completed research supported by two Adrian Tinsley Undergraduate Research grants. Julia has been a senator-at-large and a commuter-at-large for the Student Government Association and the recipient of Association's Unsung Hero Award. She has been active in the Social Justice League for two years and has served as the league's treasurer. Julia was a member of the Conduct Board, she Jewish Student Association and Israel. Julia has dedicated her time to volunteer work in her community. She is involved with Saturdays of Service, is a reader at the Easton Public Library's Children's Story Hour, and during her freshmen year participated in the alternative winter break trip to New Orleans, where she volunteered to build houses for families affected by hurricane Katrina. She recently finished a half marathon in Las Vegas to benefit Crohn's and Colitis research for a cure. Julia creatively created and marketed "Cards for Crohn's" and was successful in raising $5300 for the benefit.

Danielle Leonard, is a social work major with a minor in psychology who has devoted her time at BSU to community service and leadership. She is a member of social work honor society, Beta Chi Chapter of the Phi Alpha, Danielle, an active member and leader of the BSU chapter of Circle K, has been recognized by the New England District Circle K as an Outstanding Club Secretary, and most recently for her leadership as the the chapter's president, as an Outstanding Club Officer. Through her involvement with Circle K, she has organized teams for Relay for Life team for the American Cancer Society.  Danielle's passion for helping the children is evident by her work as a tutor for School on Wheels, a Corp Member for Jumpstart, and as a counselor for Camp Sunshine. She has acted as a role model and teacher for countless young children who live in impoverished areas and homeless shelters. She is the recipient of AmeriCorps Student Leaders in Service Award to recognize her 300 hours of service. Danielle is an intern with Head Start for the Department of Children and Families.

 

Paraskevi "Vivi" Liousas majors in elementary education and mathematics. A President Scholar, Paraskevi participates in the Honors Program for mathematics and is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education. She  conducted a 10 week research project supported by an ATP Summer Grant and presented her findings at the Summer Symposium for Undergraduate Research. Paraskevi shares her competency in mathematics by helping her peers as the Head Tutor for the math lab.  She has honed her teaching skills through employment opportunities as a teacher of gymnastics and the modern Greek language. Paraskevi has participated in breadth of co-curricular activities.  She has volunteered to tutor children and young mothers living in various homeless shelters, served as a coach for the "Self Expression and Leadership Program" with Landmark Education, also participated in several forums and seminars with that group.  She has participated in the BSU Dance Company as part of the casts of Winter Dance and Dance Pops!

 

Gary Lowell majors in political science with a concentration in legal studies and a minor in criminal justice.  He is an active and visible member of the BSU community who is involved in many programs and organizations. Gary, a four year member of  a member of the Residence Hall Association, co-chaired the committee in amending the organizations constitution. He has also served The Comment as a news writer, columnist and the editor of the opinion section.  Gary also served the student body as senator for the Student Government Association for a year before he left campus for a semester for an internship with the Washington Center in Washington D.C. Gary also very actively serves his community and in addition to participating in many service events sponsored through the Community Service Center, he has been an active member of Circle K for three years.  While he is very well-rounded outside of the class room, Gary's greatest distinctions may just be his considerable academic accomplishments.  He has made Dean's List each year that he has attended BSU and had two of his papers published in The Undergraduate Review.  Gary was also inducted into the political science Pi Sigma Alpha honor society.    

 

Matthew Menard graduated in January with Summa Cum Laude with a major in Elementary Education and Mathematics.  He has been on the Dean's List for four years and is the recipient of numerous academic scholarships.  He participated in an adventurous student teaching semester in England.  His work experience has prepared him well for a career in teaching, as he has been a summer camp counselor and a Little League umpire. He has helped students at BSU with their math skills, functioning as a math tutor and math coach.  He is a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, and international honor society in mathematics as well as a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in the field of education. Matthew participated in the "Take a Break, Make a Difference" service trip to Belize, painting the outside of the school where he taught for a week to improve the learning atmosphere.  He has volunteered to lead weekend campus tours and participated in "Creative Learning Day" with children of Brockton.  He has been a basketball coach for K-8 students for four years on Saturday mornings.  He is the President of the X-Factor Math Club, and is also the captain of several intramural sports teams on campus, including softball, soccer, handball and football.
 

 

Nicole Mitchell is a communications major and a member of Lambda P Eta, the national communication honor society who balances the rigors of a successful academic career, a passion for community service, and the demands of being a single mother. Since freshman year, Nicole has been actively involved in Jumpstart, an AmeriCorps program teaching preschool children literacy skills. Nicole now works as a volunteer coordinator for the program responsible for organizing the Baskets of Love program.   She has been recognized for her commitment and hard work as a three time recipient of the AmeriCorps Service Award. Through the support of  an Adrian Tinsley Undergraduate Research Grant, Nicole conducted analysis with a research group on an organization's sustainability and public relations campaigns and was elected as the Director of Website Design to present team's findings; the group, which was presented at the Mid Year Symposium for Undergraduate Research.  

Monica Monteiro majors in sociology who participates in the Commonwealth and Departmental Honors program and a member of Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Honor Society.  through the support of an Adrian Tinsley Undergraduate Research Grant, Monica is completing research on the intersections of race and gender in the mainstream media. She completed a summer internship at the Homes for Families in Boston, a nonprofit advocacy group organization addressing family homelessness in the commonwealth .  Monica has served as the Editor in Chief of The Comment for three years where she manages all aspects of running a newspaper including staff, budget and publishing deadlines.  Through her position as Editor, Monica serves on the Student Leader Council. She was involved with the student campaign to secure Fair Trade certification for BSU on the Central Strategy Committee and Public Relations liaison.  Monica will represent her class at May commencement in her role as student marshal.

 

 

As a social work major, Angelica Pyott is committed to social justice. Angelica completed 490 internship hours the Southeast Alternative School where she counseled clients and recorded the  progress of her students who attend this therapeutic day school. She completed a second internship with the Angel House where she assisted with childcare for single mothers and attended support groups. Angelica is a member the social work honor society, Phi Alpha, Beta Chi Chapter. Beyond her service to the community through her major, Angelica has volunteered with the Champ House in Hyannis, the Falmouth Senior Home, and the Noah Shelter. Additionally, she has been a spokesperson for the Cape Cod Justice for the Youth organization about restorative justice issues as they relate to the Cape. These opportunities have encouraged Angelica to pursue her masters in social work upon graduation from BSU. All of Angelica's accomplishments are shared with her three year old daughter whom she wants to succeed just as she has. 

 

Dawn Rosenbaum excels academically in the Honors Program as a biology major with a biomedical concentration and  chemistry minor. The recipient of a Adrian Tinsley Undergraduate Research grant, Dawn completing research on the synthesis of ditopic metallointercalators for DNA binding and cleavage. In addition to her academic prowess, Dawn is a highly involved student leader. She is the director of finance for the Program Committee who formerly served as the Homecoming and Springfest vice-chair and the Street Team director. She is as a senior resident assistant who assist the resident director in supervising resident assistant, is a member of Residence Hall Association and the executive secretary of the Student Government Association. Dawn looks forward to a career in medical sciences and to continuing her passion for learning and helping those around her.

 

 

Allysha Roth has participated in the Honors Program and has been on the Dean's List for 4 years. During her first year at BSU, she presented a research opinion paper on compensation for exonerated individuals at the Mid Year Symposium. She is a member of Pi Kappa Delta. Allysha is an active leader in volunteer and community service work. She was a volunteer research assistant at the Brockton VA Hospital during her sophomore year, she is active in Circle K International and has served as its public relations chair, editor, and project chair. She has been involved in projects for various organizations: American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, Kiwanis, Project Bread, and Camp Sunshine. For her exemplary work with these groups, she has been awarded the Camp Sunshine Volunteer Appreciation Award, and the Member Appreciation Award CKI. Allysha has also been a member on the Forensics Competitive Speaking Team where she has competed and placed for BSU in persuasive and impromptu speaking competitions.
Tristen Spear is an earth science major with a concentration in geology and a minor in physics. During her time at BSU, Tristen has been involved in two departmental clubs; the Physics Club and the Geological Society. Academically, Tristen has been recognized on the Dean's List five times and holds membership in Sigma Gamma Epsilon, the international geology honor society, of which she serves as treasurer. Tristen completed an independent research projects on geophysics and interned with the Conservation Commission in West Bridgewater where she surveyed plots of land. For the past five years, Tristen has volunteered her time with the Dollars for Scholars fundraiser program where she served as a leader in collecting scholarship monies for students in her hometown of Rockland. This experience has encouraged her to further her own education and pursue graduate school next fall. 

Samantha Steen is a psychology major who engages in learning beyond the classroom through a multitude of service projects that directly benefit young children. She is a site coordinator for Ater School Works, who has  been a AmeriCorps Member with Jumpstart (Corps Member) and a clinician for the Children's Physical Developmental Clinic. Samantha's works with the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center (MARC) and presented her work BSU's Experiential Learning Symposia.  Samantha's strong work ethic didn't just play out in her service work. During her time at BSU, she has also been a very strong student.  Samantha has made the Dean's List each year that she has studied at BSU.  Her academic skills and work ethic was so strong that she was selected to be a peer assistant leader in the Psychology Department.  Her work as a Peer Assistant Leader provided fellow psychology students with support, guidance and progress updates.    

 
Jennifer Stewart is an English major with a minor in secondary education who has been recognized on the Dean's List each semester and a member of Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society and Jennifer has presented a scholarly paper at the Literary Undergraduate Conference. Beyond the classroom, Jennifer has studied abroad in England as well as participated on a study tour to China. Due to her strong skill in her English, Jennifer serves as a tutor in the Writing Studio on campus. She is a peer educator with McADOC,  which is a program that focuses on health and wellness issues. Jennifer has also been involved in Program Committee, Circle K and the BSU Wind Ensemble playing the flute. She volunteers in her community as as a youth group leader and religious education teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish.  All of her experiences have impacted her development as she aspires to be a high school English teacher.

Raul Vazquez majors in business management and has a strong interest in international business and diplomacy. This is clear from his participation in three international study tours to France, China, and Nicaragua. Raul's desire for global experiences is obvious through his work as an office assistant in the Center for International Engagement and his role as vice president of the Sigma Pi International Fraternity. Raul is an engaged student leader who has served as a senator for the Class of 2011, senate chair, student body president, and most recently as student trustee for the Student Government Association and the SGA representative on the Student Leadership Council. . Through these roles Raul has served as an important liaison between the university and students. Raul's ability to serve the institution on so many levels while traveling the world through study tours has encouraged him to pursue a career in international affairs.
