Killam Fellowships Program Outline

Application Deadline: December 12, 2008

The Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States, in partnership with the American Killam Trusts, has created a high level scholarship/exchange program for undergraduate students titled the Killam Fellowships Program. The Program provides exceptional undergraduate students from universities in Canada and the United States with the opportunity to attend university in the other country and participate in the life of the other community for either one semester or a full academic year. These awards, valued at US$10,000 ($5,000 per semester) plus an allowance for supplementary health insurance, are the first of their kind at this level between Canada and the United States. They reward academic excellence and allow students to develop an appreciation for Canadian-American relations at an early stage in their professional lives.

In addition to the basic award, certain students may be eligible for a "High Cost Allowance." The Foundation has established a fund (High Cost Allowance) which will address issues related to tuition and fee differentials and, in the process attract a more diverse group of American students. Students from private American institutions where tuition and fees are substantially higher than the public sector universities are eligible to apply through their home university to the relevant officer at the home institution for a grant (a maximum of $5000) to be paid against the student's tuition account.
