Study Abroad Scholarships Available from Bridgewater State College

 

Bristol County Savings Bank Endowed Fund for Study Abroad

Through the generosity of the Bristol County Savings Bank Charitable Foundation, this scholarship benefits a student or students making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree and planning to spend a summer or semester studying outside the United States as part of their academic program.

Award Amount: $2,350

 

Hart-McFarland for International Study

Named in memory of Walter and Marie Hart and Alwin and Eleanor Mich, parents who encouraged their daughters to expand their potential, this scholarship is awarded to an exemplary BSC student who will study abroad for a semester or academic year, and immerse him/herself in the language and culture of the non-English speaking host country.

Award Amount: $1,075

Federal Scholarships

 

Boren Awards for International Study

Boren Scholarships provide American undergraduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government.

Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security.

Award Amounts

-       $10,000 for a semester

-       $20,000 for a full academic year

* Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants proposing a full-year academic study. Summer-only programs must be eight weeks or more and limited to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEMS) students.

 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Gilman Scholarship offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students for limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities.

Eligibility

-          Undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at two-year or four-year colleges and universities

Benefits

-          Up to $5,000

-          Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being approximately $4,000.

-          Students who apply for and receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad are then eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Scholarship Program.

Academic Programs International (API)

API awards approximately $250,000 in scholarships annually ranging from $250 to $1,000 per student.

Requirements

-       Be accepted to an API program

-       A letter of recommendation

-       Two essays (a one-page essay about the current political situation in the country to which the student is applying and a one-page personal essay stating the student's goals for studying abroad, and any financial needs, financial aid status, or special circumstances about which the student would like API to know)

-       GPA 3.0 or higher

API/JCU Diversity Scholarship

The API/JCU Diversity Abroad Scholarship provides one full tuition scholarship per session abroad (Fall, Spring, Summer 1, Summer 2) to an outstanding minority student to encourage diversity at the John Cabot University campus in Rome, Italy.

Requirements

-       Be accepted to an API program

-       A letter of recommendation

-       Two essays (Research Italy's contemporary history and discuss an example of how diversity is viewed in Italian society and a one-page personal essay stating your goals for studying abroad, financial aid status and need, and/or special circumstances about which you would like API to know)

-       Applicants must be students who are underrepresented minorities in study abroad.

AustraLearn Affiliate University Scholarship

AustraLearn offers scholarships to semester/year abroad students from affiliate universities. The approximate value for each award is USD$500.

Travel Grants (sponsored by STA Travel, Qantas Airways, Air New Zealand, and Air Pacific for the AustraLearn program)

Each semester, through the generosity of STA Travel, Qatas Airways, Air New Zealand, and Air Pacific selected participants are awarded scholarships equal to the international round-trip airfare cost to/from Australia, New Zealand, or Fuji.

Gina Rosko Memorial Scholarship

Foundation for Asia Pacific Education

The Foundation for Asia Pacific Education is a non-profit organization whose mission is to create global citizens and leaders by assisting students in achieving their personal and professional goals for obtaining cultural and academic experiences within the Asia Pacific region.

Eligibility

-       Be a U.S. or Canadian citizen

-       You may apply for either a General Study Abroad Scholarship or an STA Travel

-       STA Travel Scholarship: you must have one of the following majors:

Semester at Sea

Need-based Grants

These grants are awarded by the Institute for Shipboard Education to help make the program a reality for all students regardless of financial status. Awards range from $1,000 to $10,000.

Merit Grants

Students may apply for merit-base aid if they maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above. Additional consideration will be given to those students demonstrating leadership within their campus or community. Award range from $500 to $5,000.

Seamans-Kruse Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible by the generosity of SAS alumnus. This partnership celebrates our shared mission to encourage young people to reach their highest potential, and to create in them the courage to "embrace risk and change" on their way to becoming future global leaders. Students must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA to be considered for this award. Three $2,500 grants are awarded per semester.

Diversity Abroad Scholarships

Awarded in partnership with DiversityAbroad.com. Five scholarships of $13,000 will be awarded for the fall and spring voyages. Ten scholarships of $6,000 will be awarded for the summer voyage.

Requirements

-       A short video essay on the topic "What does it mean to be a global citizen both now and in the future?"

-       A brief financial aid application form.

Janet H. Rothenberg Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the family and friends of Janet Rothenberg, a Summer 2004 participant whose life was tragically cut short by a sudden illness while she was participating in the SAS program. Grants in excess of $2,500 are available on an annual basis. 

Eligibility

-       Minimum 3.0 GPA

-       Have participated in some activity, sport, or club at their home institution

-       Preference will be given to students currently attending the University of Pittsburg and/or residents of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Alumni Scholarships

Students will be expected to correspond with the donor if selected. Students must have a 3.25 GPA or have exhibited personal leadership. Awards range from $500 to $2,000.

NSCS Scholarship "Scholar at Sea"

Members of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars are eligible to apply for this award.

One $7,000 award available for fall and spring voyages, and five $2,000 awards available for summer voyages.

Work-Study Grants

These esteemed positions are available for industrious students with the necessary experience to be successful in their assignment. Students will be expected to work two hours per day while at sea. There will be no work expectations while in port.

Work-study grants are $4,000 for spring and fall voyages, and $2,000 for summer voyages. Students are only eligible to apply for one position per voyage.

 

 Center for International Studies (CIS)

Go Global Scholarship

Scholarship awards varying from $200 to $500 per semester are available to academically qualified students who are participating in any CIS semester and year abroad program. The applicant must possess a 3.0 GPA.

Overseas Partner University Scholarship

US University Affiliate Scholarships

Requirements

1.      Be accepted to a CIS Program.

2.      Completed CIS Scholarship Application Form

3.      An essay that explains what it means to you to be a global citizen and how your CIS study abroad program might help you attain this status: double-spaced and between 500-1000 words (2-3 pages)

 The Education Abroad Network

The Education Abroad Network Scholarship

Each year the Education Abroad Network will award thousands of scholarship dollars to qualified program participants. Most awards range from $500 to $1,000, and include need-based, merit-based and travel scholarships.

Eligibility

-       Cumulative 3.1 GPA

-       Have earned a 3.0 GPA or higher each academic term

 

EuroLearn

EuroLearn Affiliate University Scholarship

EuroLearn offers scholarships to semester/year abroad students from affiliate universities. The approximate value for each award is USD$500.

British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association

Sixteen scholarships are awarded to North American students who study abroad at a United Kingdom University that is a member of BUTEX. EuroLearn's UK partners are members of BUTEX; EuroLearn students who will attend a university in UK are eligible to apply.

Gaia Community & Ode Magazine Scholarship

Gaia Community provides an oasis for those of us committed to waking up, listening to our deepest calling, and living the lives we were meant to live - while empowering and inspiring others to do the same. Ode Magazine collects stories and positive news about the people and ideas that are changing the world for the better. Gaia Community and Ode Magazine are offering a $1,000 scholarship to those two individuals with the most inspiring answers to four crucial questions.

Kymanox's James J. Davis Memorial Scholarship for Students Studying Abroad

The Kymanox mission is to facilitate effective and efficient knowledge transfer. The selected scholarship recipient will receive $1,000 for educational-related expenses. The goal of these funds is to encourage students to study abroad and experience something new to grow their knowledge of the world.

Eligibility

-       Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident

-       Strong preference will be given to students with financial need.

-       Preference will be given to students studying in a non-English speaking country.

-       Preference will be given to Engineering, Math and Science majors.

Global Studies Foundation The Global Studies Grant for Student Travel and Study Abroad

Designed to support foreign language training and other academic studies abroad, this grant provides supplemental funds for American students who already are studying abroad under the auspices of an official study abroad program conducted by an accredited academic institution. Grant recipients will be expected to acknowledge GSF's support, to report on their experiences, and to work with GSF to share those experiences as widely as possible.

Required Documents

-       A letter of application of no more than two pages that specifies your reasons for traveling, your intended program and schedule, how this particular grant can help you, and how you plan to share your experience with others upon your return.

-       A copy of your resume or curriculum vitae

-       A transcript from the schools you have attended including all post-secondary institutions

-       Two letters of recommendation addressing your capacity to make the most of this experience while overseas and when you return, at least one of which must be from a recent academic instructor

-       An official endorsement from your study abroad program or another institutional authority, indicating your travel and study plans, the anticipated dates, and its capacity and willingness to receive and process a grant for this purpose from another 501(c)(3), tax-exempt organization.

 

Golden Key Study Abroad Scholarships

This scholarship assists Golden Key members who participate in a study abroad program. At least ten $1,000 awards will be presented each year.
