COMD 355- Multicultural Perspectives on Education: Sociopragmatics in the Egyptian/ Middle Eastern culture

January 2- January 16, 2010

This course will increase students’ awareness of how individuals with communication disorders and/or special needs are treated educationally and socially in Middle Eastern culture. Students will visit schools, attend university lectures, and engage in a sociopragmatic research project.  It is expected that this experience will positively influence students’ future teaching and clinical practice with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Highlights

  •  Cairo and Giza: the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, Egyptian National Museum

  • Alexandria: Ancient Library of Alexandria, Alexandria University

  • Overnight train to Aswan: Abou Simbel   

  • 3 day Nile cruise to Luxor: Valley of the Kings, Temple of Karnak

Dr. Abdelal (Special Education & Communication Disorders) and Dr. El-Hashash (Mathematics & Computer Science) were born, raised, and educated in Egypt.  Dr. Ciocci (Special Education & Communication Disorders) teaches language, language disorders, and multicultural and diversity issues in education and communication.

Estimated Program Cost

Fulltime BSC Students

All Fulltime BSC students will be awarded a scholarship. This scholarship will cover tuition, fees, and a portion of the trip. The cost of the tour after applied scholarship money is $3,200.00

Non BSC Participants

The cost for Non BSC students will be $4,000.00 plus the cost of tuition and fees.

*Please note, all costs are subject to change due to the increase in airfare rates and the changing exchange rates that are beyond our control.

How to Apply

1. Complete the BSC Study Tour Application below and return them to the Office of Study Abroad  along

2. Visit the Financial Aid office to discuss how you will fund your trip. Some  students take out loans to fund the tour.

3. Apply for a passport immediately to ensure your ability to travel

4. Discuss any concerns with the staff in the Office of Study Abroad early in the application process.
