COMM 356- London: Food, Media, and Sustainability

 January 4- January 15, 2010

England has experienced a culinary epiphany over the past two decades. This renaissance is on display in the increased emphasis on traditional English food and food preparation methods (such as at Dorset's River Cottage),the international celebrity of English chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, and, most recently, the nation's focus on developing a comprehensive food security policy. This course takes a look at this renaissance up close, focusing on London's "foodscape"- the production, distribution, promotion, and consumption of food-with a special look at the trend toward local and sustainable food practices. The trip will include visits to London's outdoor markets and world -class museums, meetings with a number of its dedicated food practitioners, and a day-trip to Stonehenge and Bath.
