EASC 300- Mexico Study Tour
January 3- January 17, 2010

This course will center on the role of Hydrology in the development of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. We will explore the distribution of precipitation throughout the peninsula and the difficulties that both present and past civilizations have faced with the availability of water for their needs. The geology of the peninsula also exerted a major influence on the development of the soils on which crops are grown and the population dependent. Water played an important part on the materials with which the Maya constructed their monuments. The Yucatan Peninsula is the site of the asteroid impact that has been suspected as causing the demise of the Dinosaurs. One of the results of that impact was the development of a major ring of cenotes and the redirection of groundwater flow. In modern times the development of the planned resort (one of only two in Mexico) of Cancun was controlled by the availability of drinking water sources in this region. We will visit the sources of drinking water for Cancun and other population centers. We will also visit sites of adaptation of the Maya to the variables of water supply systems.
