January 2,2009- January 14, 2009

Belizean societies, cultures, and prehistory will be the focus of a 12-day Study Tour hosted by Anthropology professor, Dr. Sandra Faiman-Silva. Students will learn about Belize’s richly diverse ethnic populations: Garifunas, Mayans, Creoles, and Mennonites.  Students will practice cross-cultural investigations and participate in daily life with Mayan and Creole families, during home stays at an indigenous Mayan village in Toledo District and a Creole community in Orange Walk.  An intensive educational program in the Garifuna community of Hopkins Village will introduce students to the Afro-Caribbean Garifuna peoples.  As part of an academic program at Galen University in San Ignacio, students will learn about sustainable development in this small developing country, and travel to the Mayan classical ruins at Caracol.  Rounding out the Tour will be visits to Mayan ruins at Cahal Pech and Altun Ha, a class on Mayan healing, Garifuna drumming instruction, and a guided river ride through the Baboon Sanctuary inhabited by Belize’s rainforest-dwelling primates.
