Social Work

This two week study tour to India is designed to acquaint students with India's history, society and culture. Participants will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of how Indians have frequently dealt with diverse problems and issues that are similar to those that Americans also face.  This course is appropriate for students in all academic majors and previous knowledge of India is not required. Students will, however, be required to have an open mind and a willingness to learn about life in India, including the social systems and the socio-economic status of Indian people. Students will investigate Indian culture and social problems through site visits, artistic performances, and discussions with local citizens, expert lecturers and various scheduled and impromptu activities. Students will meet faculty from the following Indian institutions: Madras Christian College, Fatima College, and Carmel College. In order to complete the course, students will be required to write a research paper based on his/her area of interest.

Highlights:

  • Visit with students and faculty from the most prestigious schools and colleges in India.
  • Gain knowledge of the Indian socio-cultural system through expert faculty lectures.
  • Observe and study the operation of social welfare agencies in India.
  • Learn about the historical influence of the British and French in the colonies of India prior to Indian Independence (1947) through visits to museums.
  • Visit Hindu Temples in Kanchepuram, Tanjavur, and Madurai to learn about the religious and cultural influences on families and their beliefs.
  • Witness the famous Harvest festival (Pongal) on the 14th of January, a ritual in every family and community.
  • Observe and study Indian rural life and the concept of  the family in various villages.
  • Visit the green, serene nature of Indian pastures in Kerala and Tamilnadu. 

Estimated Program Cost

Fulltime BSC Students

All fulltime BSC students will be awarded a scholarship of $1,449.65. This scholarship money will cover tuition and fees as well as a portion of trip. The  total cost for fulltime BSC students  after the applied scholarship money will be $3,273.00*.

Non BSC Participants

The cost for non BSC participants will be $3,959.00* plus tuition and fees. Tuition and fees for AY 2008-2009 is $763.65 for a 3 credit course.

Cost Includes:

  • Bridgewater State College faculty leader
  • Roundtrip flights from Logan International Airport in Boston
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily
  • Taxes, tips, and entrance fees to any sites listed on the itinerary
  • Ground transportation associated with course

How to Apply

1. Complete the BSC Study Tour Application below and return them to the Office of Study Abroad

2. Visit the Financial Aid office to discuss how you will fund your trip. Some students take out loans to cover the cost of the trip.

3. Apply for a passport immediately to ensure your ability to travel.

4. Discuss any concerns with the staff in the Office of Study Abroad early in the application process.
