ARTH 214/514 Tanzania Study Tour

May 18 - June 5, 2009

Students will travel to Tanzania for a three-week study tour. There, students will learn about the art of Tanzania and its relationship to the culture, history, and people. Community service through teaching will be a component of the course. Each student will teach a topic of interest to the community through the United African Alliance Community Center (UAACC). Students will develop lesson plans and demonstrate their teaching skills while working with Tanzanian students ranging in age from youth to adult. Students will hone their teaching and learning abilities in an environment with limited resources. This is a unique opportunity for students interested in learning about Africa through first-hand involvement in a developing community.

The study tour will be anchored in a village a short drive from Arusha, Tanzania at the UAACC. This community center helps to serve the needs of the community by bringing clean water, communication services, and educational programs to those in need. Over the last thirty years the UAACC has developed literacy, communications, architecture, and computer programs for the youth of the community. More importantly, they have learned from the Tanzanians about hospitality and camaraderie with their neighbors. Participants in this study tour will contribute to the development of further programs and teaching while also learning from local Tanzanians important lessons on hospitality and camaraderie.

Highlights

  • Teach and learn from Tanzanian students and village members in the community center, elementary school and orphanage
  • Visit the heart of Africa and observe wildlife of East Africa
  • Hike the base of Mount Kilimanjaro
  • Visit a traditional Masai village and interact with an ethnic group that has survived for thousands of years through animal husbandry
  • Learn about political activism and community building from our hosts, Pete and Charlotte O'Neil, former Black Panthers from the United States
