Jordan

ANTH 355/555

May 18-May 30,2009

Jordan lies at the crossroads of several important trade routes connecting the major centers of the Middle East, and it has served in this capacity for thousands of years. The modern nation of Jordan is a parliamentary democracy, yet it is ruled by a king who traces his descent to the prophet Muhammad. It is a mix of modernity and tradition, and while it has been apart of many empires (the Hellenistic, Roman , Islamic, and Ottoman to name a few) it has managed to forge its own identity and continues to do so in the present day. Students will visit prominent archaeological sites and ongoing excavations, meet with faculty from several academic institutions, and have the opportunity to observe the intersection of ancient and modern cultures in this stable, forward-looking Muslim country.

Highlights

  • Academic programs at Jordanian institutions of higher education and museums
  • Visits to Petra, Jerash, and other Jordanian archaeological sites of several periods
  • Ethnographic observations of modern Jordanian culture
