SOCI 265/565- Sociology Study Tour : Contemporary Urban Japan

June 1- 14th, 2010

This two-week study tour will focus on contemporary Japanese culture, including language, religion, art, and food in the context of contemporary Japanese urban society. Students will spend time in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, visiting major World Cultural Heritage sites around and in these cities. Students will also visit Japanese neighborhoods in order to see and experience street and neighborhood life. We hope that the tour will spend several days in the Seminar House hosted by Kansai University and have a chance to meet Japanese students at Kansai.

 

  Highlights

  • Visit Tokyo and become familiar with several areas of this exciting metropolis

  • Spend time in Kyoto, Japan’s traditional cultural center

  • Visit Tsukiji, the Tokyo fish market “at the center of the world”

  • Free time to visit anime cafes, shopping areas, and other attractions

Faculty Leader: Dr. Walter Carroll

Dr. Walter F. Carroll, Professor of Sociology,  first visited Japan in 1965. He has returned several times, especially in the last few years. He specializes in urban Japan and the role of food in Japanese culture and society. He is currently studying sushi, globalization, and Japanese food culture.

Estimated Program Cost

Fulltime BSC Students

All Fulltime BSC students will be awarded a scholarship. This scholarship will cover tuition, fees, and a portion of the trip. The cost of the tour after applied scholarship money is $3,633.00

Non BSC Participants

The cost for Non BSC Participants is $4,033.00

How to Apply

1. Complete the BSC Study Tour Application below and return them to the Office of Study Abroad

2. Visit the Financial Aid office to discuss how you will fund your trip. Some students take out loans to cover the cost of the trip.

3. Apply for a passport immediately to ensure your ability to travel.

4. Discuss any concerns with the staff in the Office of Study Abroad early in the application process.
