This course will be conducted on site in Istanbul Turkey and will focus on firsthand viewing and experience of the culture, art, and architecture of Turkey in Istanbul and its region. All periods from the Classical Greek & Roman world, to the glory of Byzantine and Ottoman hegemony of the city until 1922, through the globally influenced era of the modern and post-modern world are readily available for study in this historic and vibrant urban center. Morning classes will prepare students for their direct experience of the market ( the 'Covered Bazaar') and shopping districts walking through the 'old' and 'new' cities. Students will visit both its secular and religious monuments as well as its museums including Topkapi Palace, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the Sadberk Hanim Museum on the Bosphorus. There will also be a visit to Bursa, a major trade center for the ancient and Byzantine worlds and the first Ottoman capital.
ECON 336
Istanbul has been a cultural, economic, financial, and political hub for many civilizations. It maintains the same status for the present-day Republic of Turkey. As a World metropolis situated on two continents, layers of history stand clearly visible to the naked eye. The city, seen as a link between the East and West, the past and future and the old and new, fuses the modern with traditional. Istanbul thrives on this fusion.
This study-tour course will cover the typical evolution of emerging economies with a specific reference to Turkey. Emerging countries display development patterns distinct from more developed or less developed economies. The emphasis will be Turkey's current economic structure, its trade relations, and trade patterns in an increasingly globalized world. Istanbul as a microcosm of a metropolitan city in an emerging economy will be the vantage point.
As part of the study tour major economic institutions will be visited. These institutions include traditional market places, a contrasting modern shopping center, a typical mid-size factory, the National Chamber of Commerce, Turkish Central Bank and museums.
The base of the tour will be
in Bosphorus University which has been at the center of bilingual higher
education for more than a century and a half. This university with its modern
amenities has been accommodating numerous international study programs.
