COMM 356: Exploring the Middle East: Media, Intercultural Communication, and Public Diplomacy
May 17-29, 2010

This international course intends to provide an educational opportunity for students to visit and learn about the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It offers students a chance to understand and reexamine their own perception of the country, its history, civilization, culture, traditions, and people before, during, and after the visit.

Highlights
Acquaint students with the media organizations in Jordan and how they cover local, regional, and global issues.
Expose students to the educational systems in the country, Islamic traditions and Practices.
Increase students historical, cultural, political, and social insights of Jordan through lectures and observations.
Visit historical landmarks of Petra, Karak, Dana, the Dead Sea, Jarash, Ajloun; Aum Qais, Madaba, and many others.
Learn the foundation of Arabic language for beginners, and practice the language for those who already learned it.
Socialize and interact with Jordanian students and families
Spend sometime with the Jordanian Bedouins in the south and east of the country and experience fabled codes of genuine hospitality and well established kinship.
Enjoy great fresh vegetables, fruits, and Jordanian delicious cuisine.
Faculty Leader: Dr. Jabbar Al-Obaidi
Dr. Al-Obaidi is the chairperson of the Communications Department at Bridgewater State College. He has traveled to Jordan numerous times, and has previously led Study Tours to Jordan.

Estimated Program Cost
Fulltime BSC Students
All Fulltime BSC students will be awarded a scholarship. This scholarship will cover tuition, fees, and a portion of the trip. The cost of the tour after applied scholarship money is $2,068.00
Non BSC Participants
The cost for Non BSC Participants is $2,468.00

1. Complete the BSC Study Tour Application below and return them to the Office of Study Abroad
2. Visit the Financial Aid office to discuss how you will fund your trip. Some students take out loans to cover the cost of the trip.
3. Apply for a passport immediately to ensure your ability to travel.
4. Discuss any concerns with the staff in the Office of Study Abroad early in the application process.
