Writing Subtest Study Guide - Grammar and Usage, Approaches and Strategies

The best defense for the Grammar and Usage portion of the exam is a strong offense. Here are some strategies to help you prepare:
  • Get out all of those old papers and, using a grammar handbook, slowly and methodically begin to correct those comma splices, fragments, and run-ons. Pay particular attention to subject and verb tenses.
  • As you read textbooks for your other classes, note how those writers and editors use the comma, colon, and semicolon.
  • Take an old paper or essay to the Test Counselors. They will be happy to pinpoint your repeated errors and give you a no nonsense approach to grammar.
  • Scan a good grammar handbook . . .
