Reading Subtest Study Guide - Reading Comprehension: Approaches and Strategies

To complete this section of the Reading Subtest, you will be asked to read a passage and answer a series of multiple choice questions relating to that passage.

To Complete:

  1. Read the directions carefully.
  2. Look at the title and length of the selection.
  3. Read through the types of questions you will have to answer. Do not bother to read the questions in detail--just look for the type of question.
  • main idea
  • author’s purpose
  • general understanding
  • specific details
  • word meaning
  1. Survey the selection by skimming the first and last paragraphs.
  2. As you read, physically mark important terms. Upon finishing each paragraph, write a few words in the margin as a reference to the main point of that paragraph.
  3. As you read and answer the multiple choice questions, refer back to your notes first. If you are still not certain, look more closely at the paragraph which supports the answer.
  4. To answer multiple choice questions
  • Survey your margin notes
  • Look for the paragraph that relates to the question
  • Read your notes
  • Review the paragraph in question
  • Eliminate any answers that do not work
  • Decide between the remaining answers

Do not leave any question unanswered
