Mathematics Placement Exams at Bridgewater State
College--Mathematics Exam General Strategies
- Getting the
first three or four questions correct is important
to your score. Take your time and check your answer
even if you see it among the offered choices.
- All common
mistakes have been incorporated into the offered
answer choices. If you see your answer among the
choices, look for similar answers, then check your
work to see if you made a careless error.
- The correct
answer is always among the options; try working
backwards from given answers to determine the
correct option. This is especially helpful with word
problems.
- When you
find you must guess, try to eliminate some of the
options to improve your chances of guessing
correctly.
- The test is
adaptive so the more questions you answer correctly,
the more difficult the following questions will be.
So, if questions get more difficult this means you
have done well so far.
- A major
reason for low test scores is careless work. Work
problems a second time on a clean sheet of paper to
check your work.
- Take the
test seriously. The score you earn will determine
whether you may take a math course for college
credit!
