2nd Major Options for Early Childhood, Elementary and Special Education

Education majors are required to choose a second major. For purposes of advising, Education majors should meet with the 2nd major department chairperson first, and then with the department chairperson of the education department.

2nd Majors that are Appropriate

Anthropology Art Biology
Chemistry Chemistry-Geology Computer Science
Communication Arts & Sciences Earth Science Economics
English Geography History
Mathematics Music Philosophy
Physics Political Science Psychology
Sociology Spanish

2nd Majors that are NOT acceptable:

Accounting & Finance
Criminal Justice
Physical Education
Aviation Science
Health Education
Social Work
Communication Disorders
Business/Management Science

Tips

  • Students majoring in early childhood, elementary or special education are strongly encouraged to take a major in one of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks "content" areas such as: English, History, Political Science, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Chemistry-Geology, Earth Science, Geography, and Physics and Spanish.
  • Students who plan to enroll in Special Education* Severe Disabilities Concentration are encouraged (but not required) to declare psychology as their liberal arts major.
