Director's Welcome

Welcome to the University and Community Partnerships webpage! I hope you find this page useful and informative. There's a lot going on and we are happy to share this information with you. Please feel free to contact the office if you have news, an event or opportunity that you would like us to share with the campus and the community.

Don't forget to click on Meet the Staff and acquaint yourself with Lynne and me.  Find out what events are going on at BSU and in the community under "Community Outreach" by clicking on the Events and Promotions link.  Check out the News link to find out what we have been doing lately and the Publications link will take you to our annual reports and past and present E-Newsletters.

The One Book One Community program continued to gain popularity with the reading of  Dark Tide: The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919 by Stephen Puleo last Spring 2011. We enjoyed a delicious molasses cookie contest as our kick-off event, Media expert Donna Halper, shared stories about media coverage during the early 1900's and we heard about the writing of the book by Stephen Puleo at our culminating event.

This Fall 2011, Dragon House is the book choice for One Book One Community.  We will be focusing on the plight of children living in the streets and in orphanages in countries around the world such as Vietnam (as depicted in Dragon House), Belize, Cape Verde and Cambodia.  Many of our university faculty are working in these areas to bring awareness, expertise and hope to many children without families.

John Shors will be at BSU on November 8, 2011 to talk about his book and the Blue Dragon Foundation.  Proceeds from Dragon House are donated to the Blue Dragon Foundation to help children get off the streets of Vietnam and into school. Please join us for this culminating event and meet the author!

In addition to our ongoing partnerships, new opportunities in the community surface each week. The importance of these opportunities cannot be underestimated. Each gives our students, faculty and staff the chance to experience civic engagement in very tangible ways, opening doors and helping to make a difference in students' lives and the lives of many others.

Thank you for your continued interest and involvement.

Sincerely,

Susan McCombe,
