Two-Spirited is the empowering story of Rodney "Geeyo"
Poucette's shattering encounter with prejudice and his
journey to overcome it. Geeyo has competed as a Jingle
Dress dancer a category normally reserved for women.
During a powwow, an elder discovered that Geeyo was, in
fact, a man and took away his championship. Deeply
humiliated, he stopped dancing. Six years later, he
makes a triumphant return to the powwow arena, realizing
that the only way to change people's minds is to walk
proudly, while being true to one's spirit.

Some Elders say, 'the drum is the heartbeat of
Mother Earth.' The drum has a power that
captivates and enchant us: it's a sound that few
can resist.
His Guidance is the story of Rocky Morin, a
drummer who first felt the pull of the drum
almost 15 years ago. He hasn't looked back
since. This stirring short film examines his very
personal relationship to the drum, including his
first encounter with a powwow drum and how that
experience ultimately changed his life.
For this proud drumkeeper, the drum is like a
"kind old man," offering guidance and knowledge.
The drummer shows us how he takes care of the
drum - both physically and spiritually - and how
it takes care of him in return.
His Guidance is a powerful reminder of the need
to maintain a strong connection to one's roots
and that in doing so; we continue to honour the
wisdom of the Elders.

"Mackenzie's sparkling, moody black-and-white images of what
might be called the Native American Diaspora... depict a classic American story
of aspiration and tragedy. It is beautiful and devastating."

"Shot through with humor and nerve and keyed to the throb of
Anthony Hilder and the Revels' thrillingly seedy garage rock... The
black-and-white camerawork ... is so starkly high-contrast that the outdoor
shots have the muscular definition of a graphic novel. The black has surprising
depth, catching hard edges within shadows; the white burns a halo around every
liquor-store sign or streetlight."

The 1969-71 occupation of Alcatraz Island, off the
shores of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, brought together Native people from
across the country and beyond for the first time since battling the cavalry of
the advancing United States Army in the 1880s. Alcatraz is a landmark in the
contemporary Native American political front--a place where many found their
voices in the shadow of the Civil Rights movement and in the face of the
continued injustices perpetrated on American Indians by the United States
government.

According to this film it is
difficult to compete in the modern world if you are a Navajo Indian. The culture
of Navajo Indians stresses mediation and joint effort. How do we know this?
Well, it proved extremely difficult for the various coaches who went to Shiprock
High School, New Mexico in order to teach Navajo girls how to play basketball.
In the end it took a very special coach - a 24-year-old black athlete called
Jerry Richardson. Nick Fraser Storyville Series Editor
