WAC Discussion Group: “Are My Writing Assignments Culturally Inclusive?”

This WAC Discussion Group is co-sponsored Project Compass.  The discussion leaders include WAC Coordinator Michelle Cox, Teaching for Inclusive Excellence Members Maggie Lowe and Nancy Van Leuven, and Project Compass Members Joel Litvin, Teresa King, and Wing-Kai To. The discussion will focus on the importance of developing writing assignments that are culturally inclusive.

Discussion questions include:

What are the qualities of cultural inclusive writing activities and assignments?

What can I do to make my writing assignments more inclusive?

How can my writing assignments help to construct culturally relevant and affirming learning environments?

What are the possibilities and limits of universal design as a framework for culturally inclusive pedagogy?

This workshop is open to all who are interested in taking part in the discussion.  Come to share your knowledge, learn from your colleagues, and discuss strategies for developing writing assignments that are culturally inclusive.  You are welcome to bring an assignment or syllabus to share.

This discussion group will be held twice, to accommodate different teaching schedules:

Wednesday, November 4, from 10:00-11:30 in the CART Board Room (Moakley), led by Michelle Cox, Joel Litvin, Teresa King, and Nancy Van Leuven.

Thursday, November 5, from 2:00-3:30 in the OUR Multipurpose Room (Library 200), led by Wing-Kai To, Teresa King, and Maggie Lowe.
