Embracing Writing Awards for Writing Excellence
The editors of Embracing Writing: First- and Second-Year Writing at Bridgewater State University are seeking exemplary student essays written for Writing I, Writing II, First Year Seminar, and Second Year Seminar. Students who submit excellent work in the below categories may have it published in the next edition of Embracing Writing.
The winner of each of the following categories will receive $50, be guaranteed publication in the next edition of Embracing Writing, and be recognized at the 2011 Embracing Writing Reception, which will take place on October 20, the National Day on Writing:
1. Excellence in Persuasive WritingAwarded to a student paper written for ENGL 101 or ENGL 102 that demonstrates effective use of illustration or evidence to support a thesis, using an appropriate citation format to cite sources, if used.
2. Excellence in Creative Non-FictionAwarded to a student essay written for ENGL 101 or ENGL 102 that demonstrates insight and effective use of voice and other literary devices.
3. Excellence in Researched WritingAwarded to a student paper written for ENGL 101 or ENGL 102 that demonstrates effective use of secondary sources to support an argument or inform readers, using an appropriate citation format.
4. Excellence in RevisionAwarded to a student paper written for ENGL 101 or ENGL 102 that demonstrates effective revision strategies, using an appropriate citation format, if used. A student entering in this category must submit all drafts (at least two or more) of the essay.
5. Excellence in First Year Seminar WritingGiven to a student for an exemplary paper, written in First Year Seminar, that serves to reinforce, share, or interpret knowledge, and makes excellent use of supporting evidence.
6. Excellence in Second Year Seminar WritingGiven to a student for an exemplary paper, written in Second Year Seminar, that serves to reinforce, share, or interpret knowledge in a specific academic discipline.
7. Excellence in Writing on the Topic of Sustainability Given to a first or second year student for an exemplary essay, written in a 100- or 200-level course, that serves to reinforce, share, or interpret knowledge related to sustainability, and includes the three key areas of sustainability: environment, economy, and social justice.
8. Excellence in Writing Quantitative Argument: Given to a first or second year student for an exemplary essay written in a 100- or 200-level course, in which numerical or statistical reasoning is a central theme to the argument.
Submissions are accepted during both fall and spring semesters, and multiple submissions are allowed. For each submission, please complete the submission form and email it, along with your submission, to Dr. Anne Doyle (a5doyle@bridgew.edu). The deadline for submissions is the last day of spring semester.
