Richard Morey - Class of 1991
Richard Morey played football during his days at Bridgewater State College. But it is in the sport of basketball
that Dick Morey left his mark. Dick coached basketball and taught at Abington High School for forty years. His
contributions to the town of Abington were numerous and they rewarded him by naming the Abington Gymnasium the
Richard Morey Memorial after his death at the age of 72 in 1977.
He is also a member of the Massachusetts Basketball Hall of Fame. He helped modernize the sport of basketball with
his design of the all glass backboard. He followed that with the invention of portable backstops for basketball that
are used around the world.
