Provides opportunities to BSC undergraduates who wish to pursue independent research, scholarship or creative activities under the guidance of a full-time BSC faculty or librarian mentor. Through ATP, students design and develop research projects, learn new research skills, gain a more sophisticated understanding of the nature of academic research, and have opportunities to present their research and creative work at regional and national conferences. The expected outcome of this program is to graduate students with the self-confidence, motivation and ability to conduct independent scholarship and research.

The Tinsley Program supports undergraduate research, scholarship or creative work in all disciplines, conducted over the course of a semester, summer, or longer. The project may include laboratory research in the physical and life sciences; research in education, mathematics and business; scholarship in the humanities and social sciences; creative writing; and stage performances, displays or research in the visual arts and design. Although students will be conducting their own independent research, all projects must be done under the guidance of a full-time BSC faculty or librarian mentor, and disseminated in a public forum.

The Tinsley Program provides year-round support of undergraduate research through a variety of competitive opportunities:

  • Semester Grants are awarded each semester to offset the costs of research-related supplies and travel. Deadline: Review of proposals begins October 3, 2008  (Fall 2008) and February 13, 2009 (Spring 2009).
  • Summer Grants are awarded to students to conduct an in-depth, research, scholarship or artistic project over ten weeks of the summer, under the supervision of a BSC faculty or librarian mentor. The grant includes a $4,000 stipend awarded to the student, who may also apply for up to $500 in research expenses, and a mentor stipend of $1,700.00. Deadline: March 20, 2009.
  • Travel Grants support students who present their research at regional or national conferences, and fund travel, lodging, registration and related fees. Applications accepted throughout the year; students should submit applications six weeks prior to travel.
  • ATP Graduate School Application Reimbursement Program available to students who have received an ATP summer grant. ATP will refund application fees up to $250.00. MS Word or PDF Format
  • The National Conference on Undergraduate Research. BSC sends all qualified students to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), which takes place this year from April 16 - 18, 2009 at the University of Wisconsin in La Crosse, WI. Deadline: Abstracts are due December 1, 2008.
  • The BSC Undergraduate Research Symposium takes place on Friday, April 24, 2009 in the Moakley Center, and showcases undergraduate research through oral and poster presentations. Faculty, staff, students, administration and guests are welcome.
