Describe your career path since graduation.

I have been teaching elementary art K-4 since 1993. I am also doing my own freelance work--murals and painting furniture.

What is your current position and how long have you been with your employer?

Visual Arts Instructor K-3; 12 years.

Describe the main responsibilities of your position.

Creating and implementing art curriculum for 600-700 students. One parent workshop per year, one parent-child night per year, including K-4 exhibit.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Sharing my love of art with the kids.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

Teaching kindergartners and dealing with people who think the job is "fluff".

Describe your typical work week.  (How many hours you work, your work environment, etc.)

I'm here 8:15 am - 3:45 pm. I occasionally come on weekends to prepare. I teach 5-6 classes per day. I have weekly meetings with colleagues and 3 afternoons I have a duty.

What job search methods did you use to obtain your current position?

I was on the sub list. The teacher quit at the last minute and I was asked to interview when the principal saw my credentials.

What advice could you give to students interested in your field?

Know art history. NEVER call in sick. Have classroom management skills. Have a knack for learning names. Be PREPARED on the interviews --portfolios, good resume with no mistakes, dress appropriately--go overboard!
