September Alumni Career Profile

Name:  Rebecca Best

Class Year:  2003

Major:  Communication Studies

Current Employer:   Westin New York at Time Square

Describe your career path since graduation.

I have entered into the field of event and meeting management. I started off as an exhibitor services representative working with exhibitors that came into the convention centers and then I moved up to the convention and visitors bureau, still sticking with the larger meetings and conventions that came into the city. Now I live in NYC and work at the Westin Times Square planning the meetings and events that come in.

What is your current position and how long have you been with your employer?

My current job is Convention Services Manager with the Westin New York at Times Square. I have been here about seven months.

Describe the main responsibilities of your position.

I plan events and meetings that come into the hotel.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love all aspects of my job, however, the actual planning is my favorite. Creating something out of nothing is just so cool!

What do you find most challenging about your job?

Sometimes it is difficult dealing with demanding clients, but you just have to put your self in their shoes and say, if I was paying this much for an event I would be the same way!

Describe your typical work week.  (How many hours you work, your work environment, etc.)

I put in a lot of hours. When we are busy I will work 60-70 hours a week. Also, be prepared to work weekends.  I have not had a weekend off in a LONG time.  I have to say though, I love my job so much that the hours don't even bother me!

What job search methods did you use to obtain your current position?

All of my jobs were obtained through word of mouth. Get in good with people in the industry and you will be amazed what comes your way!

What advice could you give to students interested in your field?

It's not all glamorous like you see on TV. It's a lot of hard work, but it is the best job in the world!
