The Bridgewater State College Job Shadow
Program During Winter Break provides students with
the opportunity to visit companies
and organizations to explore careers, network with
professionals and learn about jobs and internships -
all in one day -
during Winter Break.
The Program
Students
apply to participate in
a Job Shadow
with one company or organization from the
following
list
by Friday, November 13, 2009.
For one day
or half day during Winter Break, the Job Shadow
participants tour the company or organization, observe the daily
routines and activities in the different divisions, and are introduced
to professionals.
The Job Shadow program takes place during the
first two weeks of
January. Students must arrange their own
transportation to the Job Shadow site.

Go "behind the
scenes" in a television studio.
BTV9 is a
television production facility that produces and broadcasts local
programming to the Bridgewater community. This Job Shadow
opportunity is located in Bridgewater, MA. Students interested in
careers related to Communication Studies, Business, English, Art
(Graphic Design) and Theater are encouraged to apply.
Explore the corporate world. MEDITECH
is a leading provider of software to the health care industry.
Their offices are located in
Westwood, MA. All students interested in working in the corporate world can participate in this Job Shadow.
Network in the accounting world.
KAF Financial Group is one of the
leading CPA and Business Advisory firms in the Boston area with services
ranging from accounting and audit, financial advising, tax consulting,
and management consulting. KAF is located in
Braintree, MA.
Accounting majors are encouraged to apply for this Job Shadow.

Explore a non-profit organization. The
New Hope
organization delivers support services to adults and families impacted
by sexual assault and domestic violence. A number of opportunities
are available for student interested in seeing how a non-profit agency
works: There will be Shadows in the areas of Finance/Accounting,
Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, as well
as Public Relations, Marketing and Communications. The
Shadow opportunity will take place at their
Attleboro, MA location.

Learn about jobs that protect our state's
natural resources. The
Massachusetts Department
of Game and Fish works to preserve Massachusetts and offers award
winning environmental education programs. Students
interested in the areas of conservation or wildlife management, marine
studies or zoology should apply. Science enthusiasts preferred. Location
will depend on the specific interests of the student.
See the business side of government. The
Department of Environmental Protection is the environmental police
for recycling,
management of toxics and hazards and wetland and coastal preservation.
The DEP is seeking all majors but in particular those interested in Management and IT careers. Location will depend on the specific

Tour and meet the staff of a corrections
facility. The
Department of Corrections
provides public safety through safe, secure, humane confinement and
successful re-entry of the offender population. Participants will tour a
corrections facility in Southeastern Massachusetts, exact location to be
determined. Students interested in pursuing work in the field of
Criminal Justice are encouraged to apply for this Shadow.
The Requirements

In order to participate in the Job
Shadow Program During Winter Break, you must be a full-time, matriculated undergraduate.

A GPA of 2.5+ (cumulative) is required. First year
students are eligible to apply.

Once you commit to the Job Shadow Program, you
must fulfill
your one day or half-day Shadow assignment.

Students participating in the program must complete the online
application
and attach a resume.
Career Services can help you prepare and edit your resume.
Prior to Submitting the Application

Review the companies and organizations
above and select the
one that best fits your interests and
potential career goals.

Create an account on
BSC
CareerLink and upload your resume. It takes 1-2 business
days to approve your account/resume. If there are errors on
your resume you will be directed to make an appointment with Career
Services to have your resume critiqued before you can apply to the
Job Shadow Program.

profile and resume in BSC CareerLink, skip to submitting your online
application.
To submit your application and resume:

Go to
BSC
CareerLink.

Enter your
username and password to log-in.

Click on the
Career Services Events button on the top of the screen.

Highlight
"Orientation" in the Category section and click the
Search button.

Click on the
opportunity you want to apply for. Multiple
applications from one student will not be accepted.

Read the
description provided thoroughly and if interested click on "Register
for Event".

Confirm
details and hit "Save".

When the dialog box opens, select the
resume you would like to use from the drop down menu and hit "Save".

You will then
see a confirmation message in red on the page in front of you.

is 11:59 pm on November 13, 2009
Participating in Your Job Shadow
-
You will be
contacted to set up a meeting to
provide you with details about your Job Shadow opportunity.
You must meet with Career Services in order to participate in
the Job Shadow.
Plan your transportation for the
designated day and time.
Plan your attire for the day. We recommend a shirt,
tie and slacks for men, a blouse or shirt and skirt or slacks
for women; and shoes rather than sneakers.
Prepare a short list of questions.
Sample questions are available here.
Arrive at the company or organization ten minutes before the
designated time. Bring your list of questions, a
notebook and a pen.
Enjoy your Shadow! Be sure to collect business cards from
the professionals you meet with.
These connections may help you find
internships or jobs in the future.
Send a thank you note within
48 hours of the Job Shadow.
Sample thank you letter.
Complete the evaluation that
Career Services e-mails you so that we can continue to
provide great Job Shadow experiences to future participants.
