Assistantship Guidelines
Graduate assistantships are a reality in graduate schools across America, but as
a concept do not exist at the undergraduate level. Undergraduate students,
therefore, are usually unaware of their existence and the many benefits that
graduate assistantships provide matriculated graduate students. My introduction,
then, provides rudimentary information about graduate assistantships.
The College of Graduate Studies at Bridgewater State University offers graduate
assistantships, valued up to $13,500, to well-qualified graduate students.
Graduate assistants work in an academic or administrative department twenty
hours per week during the fall and spring semesters and earn an income up to
$6,500. GAs also receive full tuition and fees remission, for up to 24 credits
total, during the fall, spring, and summer sessions, and a complimentary parking
pass. The income coupled with the tuition and fees remission makes an attractive
financial package for graduate assistants, who can complete a graduate degree
with little financial expenditure. At the same time, GAs earn valuable
professional experience, which often assists them in their careers, whether
professional or academic. A departmental graduate assistantship is particularly
valuable for students who go on to pursue doctoral degrees at larger
universities, where, with their experience with Bridgewater graduate
assistantships, they often become graduate teaching assistants.
The College of Graduate Studies welcomes you to apply for a graduate
assistantship at Bridgewater State University. The information that follows will
guide you through this process and the selection criteria. You will certainly
enjoy the dual role as a graduate student and professional employee as you are
completing your graduate degree.
Appointments are competitive and are determined by a confirmation of the
following: undergraduate and/or graduate grade point averages, experience,
educational preparation, and interviews. They are intended to encourage and
assist superior students in pursuing graduate study and in completing the
requirements for graduate degrees in the minimum possible time. The guidelines
are to be used in employing GAs within the college departments.
