Community Service Center's Main Areas of Service
Basic Needs
It's quite simple. Food. Shelter. Clothing. These are the absolute minimum resources we all need in order to live. Unfortunately, not everyone has all of these necessities or they have them in limited quantities. The Community Service Center has programs that address these basic needs. Along with the Catholic Center on campus, volunteers serve dinner at Father Bill's & Mainspring House and deliver food and furniture to families with My Brother's Keeper. During breaks, students spend a week building affordable housing in the United States with Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge. Jumpstart sponsors "Baskets of Love" during the holidays in order to fulfill wish lists for families. The Center participates in Project Bread's annual Walk for Hunger in Boston. There are many ways for you to do your part in helping others gain access to the basic needs!
People to People
People really do need people. Our signature programs provide opportunities for you to work alongside and with others. Jumpstart partners with local Head Start programs that serve children from low income families. Service on Saturdays (S.O.S.) dedicates a day to be spent with a variety of youth organizations such as Big Sister Big Brother, the Family Life Center and Girl's Inc. Twice a year, we volunteer at Camp Sunshine in Maine, a special camp for seriously ill children and their families. Students tutor young children in Belize as part of one of our Take a Break and Make a Difference alternative break programs. Whether you enjoy spending time with young children, young adults or the elderly--we have programs that will connect you with people.
Earth Matters
The environment has an impact on us all. Therefore many of us are concerned with keeping the Earth and its inhabitants safe and healthy for years to come. With programs like Earth Day, volunteers from the campus and surrounding community help to keep our conservation areas clean. Our partnership with Mass Audubon allows us to learn more about preserving wildlife and wetlands right here in southeastern Massachusetts. Also, we can not forget about our four-legged and flying friends who share the earth with us through our partnership and service at Franklin Park Zoo. Volunteers through the Community Service Center are able to do their part to show that our earth does indeed matter.
