Diane Bell, Director

Diane has served as Director of the Community Service Center since it was established in 2004. She oversees all of the signature programs and works closely with faculty who teach service-learning courses. Diane spends a great deal of her time promoting civic engagement and collaborating with many departments and student groups on campus. You will often find her building houses or serving meals alongside student and staff volunteers. The Chicago native grew up in Atlanta where she received her BA from Spelman College and her MBA in Marketing from Clark Atlanta University. Diane also holds an MS in Sport Administration from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY and served as the Community Relations Manager for the Atlanta Braves major league baseball team. An avid sports fan, Diane loves the Boston Red Sox and spends her Sundays (and Monday nights) on the couch watching football. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and through the sorority, volunteers in the cities of Brockton and Taunton.
 
 

 

 

Ashlee Downing, Program Coordinator

As, the Program Coordinator, Ashlee will help market and publicize the Community Service Center initiatives, along with supervising all local service opportunities. Ashlee attended Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. where she served as a resident assistant and was program director of the Inter Residential Housing Association. While at Fairfield she was involved in campus ministry, volunteered at a nursing home and traveled to Kentucky and Jamaica for service opportunities. After graduating with a degree in political science, Ashlee joined Francis Corps in Syracuse, N.Y. where she spent a year with other college graduates working at an after school program. Ashlee entered the Masters program at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. where she worked as a Residence Hall Director for two years and was involved in campus ministry, LGBT & Ally center, and volunteered at a nursing home. While at JMU, she also traveled to Jamaica to volunteer at elementary schools. She graduated from JMU with a Masters in Student Affairs. Born and raised in Taunton, Ashlee, is excited to work and serve those individuals in and around the Bridgewater area.

Rose is very excited to be part of the BSU community and has worked with college students for 11 years.  She earned her BS in Clinical Psychology and MA in Agency Counseling from Marywood University in Pennsylvania. She began her career in Residence Life, where she spent four years at various institutions.  In Rose's previous position, she created a community service program and worked closely with different nonprofit organizations in Springfield, MA.  In her free time, she loves to act with her community theater group, travel, spend time with family, craft and cook . She has also been a Big Sister for four years.  Rose is  looking forward to a great year and meeting many wonderful people at BSU!!

Barbara has served as the Office Manager at the Community Service Center since 2004. She is usually the first person callers and visitors to the Center encounter. She assists students with their inquiries regarding community service and provides administrative support to the department. She is an avid reader and sometimes knitter. When not working, Barbara loves to spend time with family and friends enjoying the natural beauty of New England.

 

 

 

Nicole Mitchell,  Site Manager, Jumpstart Bridgewater

As the  Site Manager for Jumpstart at Bridgewater State University, Nicole works with Josh to recruit, train, and coach 65 Bridgewater students who work to enhance the social and literacy skills of children from low-income families in the Brockton and Taunton areas. Nicole earned a BA in Communication Studies from Bridgewater State University. While earning her degree, Nicole worked closely with Jumpstart as a Corps Member, Program Assistant, and then as the Volunteer Coordinator. She is honored to be able to continue working with Jumpstart post graduation.

 

 

 

Kenny Monteiro, Assistant Director, FAM for Change Mentoring Program

Kenny is the Assistant Director of the FAM (Friends and Mentors) for Change Mentoring Program at Bridgewater State University (BSU).  Mr. Monteiro also serves as the Advisor to the Cape Verdean Student Association at BSU.  His primary areas of specialization are leadership, mentoring, social change, and equality. Kenny has worked with many organizations throughout greater Brockton: Boys & Girls Club (BGC) of Brockton, Father Bills & MainSpring, and the Cape Verdean Association to name a few. Kenny is an alumni of Brockton High School, class of 99, where he was a Peer Leader at BHS and BGC of Brockton, member of the Cape Verdean Student Association, and member of the Varsity Soccer Team and Track and Field.  He is also an Alumni of UMass Dartmouth, graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor's Degree of Science, Business Information Systems, and a minor in African/African-American Studies.  While at UMass, Kenny was the President of IAMBK (I Am My Brother's Keeper); President of the International Business Association, where he led a trip to Brazil and Argentina;  and President of the Cape Verdean Student Association, where he led the first active service trip to Cape Verde through CVSA.

 

 

 

Ashley O'Donnell, Graduate Assistant

Ashley is the graduate assistant this year in the Community Service Center. This fall semester will mark the beginning of her Master's program in Counseling with a Student Affairs focus. As an undergraduate student at Stonehill College, Ashley was involved with campus ministry, freshmen orientation, and intercultural affairs. During her undergraduate career Ashley also participated in service trips to Louisiana, Tennessee and California. After graduating in 2011 with degrees in Communication and English, Ashley completed postgraduate service within the Brockton area. She is excited to begin working in the Community Service Center this upcoming academic year!

 

 

 

 

Josh Osegueda, Site Manager, Jumpstart Bridgewater

Josh works closely with Nicole as a site manager for Jumpstart at Bridgewater State University. Josh has a strong background in early childhood education and social work and will use these skills to support the Corps members in their service to the Brockton and Taunton communities. Josh is from San Francisco, CA and earned his B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Applied Developmental Psychology from UCLA. Following graduation, Josh worked with at-risk youth around juvenile justice, substance abuse, and educational justice issues. Josh later obtained his Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan.

 

 

 

Dr. David O'Malley, Faculty Associate for Service-Learning and Assistant Professor, Social Work

David O'Malley is the faculty associate for service-learning and a faculty member in the department of social work at Bridgewater State University.  He has been involved in service-learning first as a student himself and then in his professional roles as a program administrator with the Cleveland YMCA and Case Western Reserve University. He had previously been on faculty at Cleveland State University in Ohio.  He has worked in rural and urban, as well as domestic and international settings that have made him particularly interested in the cross-cultural aspects of service-learning.  He believes that developing knowledge and skills related to human diversity are some of the most challenging, valuable and rewarding elements of service-learning work for students, faculty and staff. David is committed to connecting issues of civic engagement with service-learning so that students, staff and faculty make connections between service-learning, public policy and citizenship skills. David's practice and research interests involve interfaith dialogue/collaboration, substance abuse prevention and sustainability.  He has earned degrees from the University of Connecticut College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Yale University Divinity School and Southern Connecticut State University School of Health and Human Services. He earned his doctorate from the Case Western Reserve University Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences.
