The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) changed the professional standard regulations for school administrator licensure, and these changes become effective July 1, 2013. Candidates interested in pursuing administrator licensure should contact the Secondary Education/Professional Programs office for new program information mbuonanduci@bridgew.edu or 508-531-1320.

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates admitted to the program prior to spring 2013, who will complete all licensure requirements by December 2013, will still be licensed under the old regulations. Candidates who start this program January 2013 or later are subject to the new regulations.

Being a mother and working full time required a program that was challenging as well as flexible. I had always heard about the Bridgewater State Educational Leadership Program and after much research into other schools, I chose Bridgewater State University. It often felt like the program was tailor made for me. All of the classes were challenging and sparked deep conversations. My professors invested in me and made themselves available for questions and even helped me prepare for job interviews. I gained a greater understanding of how to make researched based decisions and how it drives effective programming that impacts the achievement gap.  I came into the program not knowing much to leaving the program confident and ready to make a significant impact on education. Right now I am the Regional Education Coordinator for the Department of Youth Services for the Boston area.

After spending six years in the business world, I finally answered the call to education. I spent the next fourteen years as a middle school Mathematics teacher and never turned back. Education is the most important job that I have ever held and after fourteen years in the classroom, I decided that I wanted to do what I could to bring the passion I had for teaching to others. I knew that my business background would come in handy as an administrator but needed some of the educational administrative knowledge that I desired to be an effective leader. The educational leadership program at Bridgewater State University provided me with the knowledge and background I needed. The flexible schedule made it more accessible to my work schedule and allowed me to pursue the Master’s on my time. The guidance and expertise of the professors was second to none. The program offered insight from professors who not only have spent their life pursuing educational knowledge but have lived it as well.

The three years that I spent at Bridgewater State University in the Accelerated School Administrator Licensure Program in Educational Leadership (LEAD) and then in the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies Program (CAGS) have positively impacted my professional career and provided the pathway for me to stay on track with my personal growth goals.  Initially, I was not sure how I would manage the balance with my family, obligations as a central office administrator and completing the work required for the programs.  The creative times that the on-campus classes are offered combined with online class opportunities allowed me the flexibility with my time that I needed to succeed.  In addition, often the discussions and expected outcomes from the classes would overlap with the work that I had to do in my school district.  This allowed me to not only complete my courses and internship with practical experiences, but to enhance my central office position projects with research and best practices.  The faculty members are not only wonderful teachers and mentors but provided authentic examples and leadership as they share their stories from their careers as administrators in the field.  The coursework and relationships developed with other educators, the support from the faculty and the completion of the CAGS Program have given me the confidence to be the best educational leader that I can be while creating and conveying an environment where anything is possible, ideas and creativity are welcome, and we find the greatest of successes working together.
