External Affairs Welcomes Mr. Fred Clark

 

 

Frederick W. Clark, '83 has joined Bridgewater State University's senior administration as Executive Vice President and Vice President for External Affairs. He comes to BSU from the Council of Presidents of the Massachusetts State Universities where he served as executive officer.

 

Clark began his long association with Bridgewater as an undergraduate in political science. After earning his law degree, he returned to Bridgewater to serve on its board of trustees as vice chair (1995-1997) and chair (1998-2002). He later became vice chair of the Bridgewater State University Foundation, completing his term in 2007.

 

While maintaining his ties to BSU, Clark cultivated a long career in business and public service. He worked for Congressman John Joseph Moakley for 17 years as district chief of staff, legal counsel and Washington liaison officer. With Clark's assistance, Moakley delivered the largest appropriation to a public college in the history of the nation in 1991 with a $10 million federal grant that led to the construction of what would become the John Joseph Moakley Center for Technological Applications at Bridgewater State.

 

Clark continues to serve as president of the John Joseph Moakley Charitable Foundation, which he co-founded in 2001. Since its inception, the Foundation has provided more than $1.6 million in scholarships for students pursuing vocational, undergraduate and graduate education, making post-secondary education possible for hundreds of students.

 

From 2006-2008, Clark served as vice president for the Mirrione Realty Corp. of Easton, a real estate development company specializing in the development of active adult retirement communities and traditional residential and commercial development.

 

As volunteer chair of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, August 2007-November 2008, Clark was instrumental in passing a $2.2 billion capital bond bill, which made possible the construction of Bridgewater's new Science and Mathematics Center, the first phase of which opened this fall.

 

Clark's extensive experience in and knowledge of public higher education includes seven years as the Executive Officer of the Massachusetts State University System Council of Presidents, where he has handled segmental public policy initiatives, budget, legislative affairs, public affairs and collective bargaining for the commonwealth's nine state universities.

 

"There is no doubt that Fred will be a major contributor to the future success of Bridgewater State University," said President Dana Moher-Faria in announcing the appointment to the campus community earlier this fall, adding that Clark has been a leader in virtually every statewide legislative and policy area impacting the state university system from student health insurance to the renaming of the former state colleges as state universities.

 

In addition to a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Bridgewater, Clark holds a Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School. He lives in South Easton and has been involved in his community as a former member of the Easton Conservation Commission, Board of Appeals, and as a longstanding youth baseball and softball coach. Fred resides with his wife, Carrie (a high school guidance counselor, Bridgewater graduate and past president of the Bridgewater Alumni Association), and their three children, Justin (a student at Bridgewater), Derek and Reilly.
