International Student works with Senator Pacheco

During the summer of 2011, Dr. Ed Minnock arranged for Clara Mauel, a Business Student from Austria, to participate in an internship in Senator Pacheco's office. Clara participated in the Senate Education Internship program where she met and heard from many of the Commonwealth's Executive and Constitutional Officers, past and present administration officials, including Governor Patrick, and other state house staff. She is fluent in English which facilitated her assimilation in her new environment. Clara spent time in formal senate sessions where she witnessed firsthand public debate on policy matters. She also interfaced with and learned about the constituents, researched budget issues and drafted responses to different inquiries. Senator Pacheco had been invited to participate in an anthology of articles for the Sustainable Future Campaign.Clara assisted in doing some research for this article. Her research included information on climate policy in the U.S. and the European Union, the clean energy sector of the U.S. economy and previous Massachusetts accomplishments in the area of environmental policy.

Senator Pacheco's office reported that prior to this; a program for recruiting international students/interns had been nonexistent in the Massachusetts legislature. They appreciated the assistance and support of External Affairs in smoothing the immigration process and making this internship possible.
