International Expert Explains Why Geography Matters

World-renowned author, professor and television personality Harm de Blij recently visited the college as a special guest of the Department of Geography.

Dr. de Blij has published more than 30 books including scientific, educational, and trade titles, as well as over 100 articles. His most recent trade book, Why Geography Matters, published by Oxford University Press in 2005, argues that America's persistent geographic illiteracy constitutes a national security risk. His textbook, Geography: Realms, Regions and Concepts, has sold more than a million copies in 12 editions since 1970.

For seven years he was the Geography Editor on ABC's "Good Morning America" and in 1996 he joined NBC News as a Geography Analyst, appearing mostly on MSNBC. He was also the writer of and commentator for the original PBS Series "The Power of Place."

Dr. de Blij recently described the extraordinary importance and relevance of geography in today's world.  Joining him for the discussion were two BSC geography professors, Dr. Vernon Domingo and Dr. James Hayes-Bohanan.
