School for Field
Studies
The School for Field Studies offers field study courses at project sites
throughout the world. Since its founding in 1980, over 9,500 college and high
school students have conducted hands-on, community-focused environmental field
work in SFS programs around the world. This website will help you discover how
you can live and study in some of the most beautiful and threatened ecosystems
in the world while earning college credit. Financial aid is available to those
who qualify.
Geology Summer Field School
A geology field school (also called field camp) is a six-credit summer course
offered by many geology departments at large universities across the country.
MACC
The Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissioners provides a certification
program for conservation commissioners. The program is an inexpensive way to
gain environmental training and a credential that will be useful for future
volunteer and professional work.
NRTB
The volunteer training page for the Natural Resources Trust of Bridgewater (NRTB)
features local and regional workshops intended to improve the skills of the
volunteer leaders of this local environmental organization. This includes many
inexpensive, one-day workshops that can enhance the education of students with
an environmental focus. Dr. Hayes-Bohanan is the Education Coordinator for NRTB,
and maintains this list of workshops.
Hazwopper Training
Any Geological Sciences or Geography Major interested in pursuing a career in environmental
management or environment science should think about completing a Hazwopper
(Hazardous Materials) Training course. Such a course will augment your resume
and make you more attractive to potential employers. Hazwopper courses are available
at numerous locations all over the country. A number of different courses are
available depending on your specific career interests. OccuHealth, Inc. in Mansfield
Massachusetts offers a wide variety of courses. During your senior year, we
recommend that you take the standard 40-hour Hazwopper Training course. The
course can usually be completed over a 4 day period. There are also a number
of organizations that offer on-line Hazwopper Training, including NET (National Environmental Trainers)
and IES (Iguana Educational Services).
Which ever option you choose, make sure that the course is OSHA compliant.
Princeton Groundwater
, INC.
This organization (which has nothing to do with Princteon University) offers
"The Groundwater Pollution and Hydrology Course". Some experience is helpful,
but not necessary, as this course does review basic principles before tackling
more advanced topics. This and other more advanced courses offered by this ogranization
will enhance your technical skills.
