Spring Forum

Spring 2011 Forum:  Social Justice, Social Policy, and Social Change

The fourth annual forum brought the college and regional community together to explore collaborative efforts to end homelessness.  Our three themes coincide with the effort to better coordinate homeless services through regional partnerships, the emphasis on a flexible, housing first approach, and the drive to create equity throughout the Commonwealth.

The event included welcoming remarks by BSU President, Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria, a keynote presentation by Neil Donovan, Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless, and featured speaker James Greene, Commissioner of the Boston Emergency Shelter Commission.

Following the keynote, Jason Desrosier, a former BSU student, presented "Empowering Underserved and Homeless Youth through Education and Civic Engagement".  Amy Cavanaugh, another former BSU student, also presented her work on the annual Qualitative Assessment conducted at St. Paul's Table.  Lunch was followed by a presentation by the Social justice League, a student group who organizes an annual tent city, and a group of students who traveled to Washington DC on a student service trip organized by the Community Service Center.

The National Coalition for the Homeless also presented the Faces of the Homeless Speaker's Bureau.  The speaker's bureau offers a unique opportunity for students and faculty to interact with people who have been homeless.  In so, doing it attempts to level the playing field by recognizing their expert knowledge and personal transformations.

Spring 2010 Forum:  Systems Change, Regional Innovations, Voices of the Homeless

This third annual forum brought the university and regional community together to explore collaborative efforts to end homelessness. Our three themes coincided with the challenges we face and the success stories that inspire us. Those who joined us learned about the Federal Strategic Plan to End Homelessness, the Regional Innovations that are working to house families and individuals, and heard the voices of homeless people who shared their personal stories of struggle and transformation. Spring 2008 Forum: A Regional Spotlight on Homelessness

(held on April 23, 2008 at Bridgewater State University)

This inaugural event, sponsored by The Task Force to End Homelessness established by President Dana Mohler-Faria, was intended to mark the beginning of an ongoing partnership between BSU and regional constituents including service providers, policy makers, elected officials and business leaders interested in ending homelessness in Massachusetts. This task force represents BSU's commitment to bring our teaching and learning resources to focus on this important issue.

This forum unveiled the Family Plan to End Homelessness in Southeastern MA and examine innovative initiatives in the region and the state.   Spring Forum 2008 Agenda
