English as a Second Language (ESL) for Employees

Offered February 2012 - April 2012

Registration Deadline: Friday, February 10, 2012

The goal of this program is to enhance the English communication skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of people including immediate co-workers, students, faculty, and staff. By enhancing the ability to communicate effectively, employees will have a higher level of confidence in the workplace as well as in the community and be able to contribute further to the University and its surroundings.

Description of Training: “ESL for Employees” is an eight-week, one on one tutoring program, beginning in February, concluding in April. Participants will be paired with a personal tutor and receive one-on-one training. It will be at the discretion of the tutor and employee to agree on a mutually convenient place and time to meet; however, participants and tutors will be encouraged to meet at the Academic Achievement Center or in the Maxwell Library. Employees will be allowed one hour per week for the eight-week training program to be dismissed from their work duties in order to participate. Both the tutor and employee must fill out the appropriate form that states their participation in this tutoring program as well as attendance record. The attendance record must be submitted to Allison Pickup in the Office of Human Resources on a weekly basis. Attendance records will be kept in the Office of Human Resources with the Human Resources Generalist. At the end of the eight-week tutoring program participants will be asked to evaluate the effectiveness of their experience.

Tutors and Content of Tutoring Program: The program will draw on the human resources developed in the Second Language Services. All tutors will be enrolled in ENGL 205 Supporting Second Language Learners course and will be trained and supervised by Dr. Julia Stakhnevich, Director of the Second Language Services at the Academic Achievement Center. The program will commence with a general meeting for all participants and tutors, during which the participants and tutors will be paired up. The first tutoring meeting will be focused on informal assessment of the four language skills (writing, reading, speaking, and listening/comprehension.) The following five tutoring meetings will be dedicated to the development of specific language skills as identified by the tutor and the participant. During the final group meeting, the tutors and the participants will evaluate the program and discuss effective strategies for participants to continue learning English on their own. The participants will be also invited to enroll in this program in the following year to work more on their language skills through focused tutoring sessions.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Allison Pickup in the Office of Human Resources at 508-531-6126.
