America and Ireland have a long, rich history of sharing and prospering from each other's culture, economy, and history. In Southern New England, with its large population of Irish descent, interest in this vibrantly blended Irish-American culture is of particular interest.
The Bridgewater State College minor in Irish-American Studies, a collaboration with Massasoit Community College, has been developed as a response to regional interest. This minor focuses on the Irish experience in America. Many institutions offer programs concentrating solely on the study of Ireland, but this program is the first in the country to delve into the subculture that Irish-Americans themselves have created. The program is multidisciplinary, complementing most majors. Course work includes study of art, history, literature, music, political science, popular culture, and sociology.
| "Irish-American Studies will provide
students with an opportunity to learn about their own heritage within
the larger context of the ethnic experience in America."
