Joe Matta '13
Joe Matta's chemistry studies took him from the construction field to an Ivy League institution. In the Fall 2013, our recent alumnus began his doctoral journey at Yale University to work toward his Ph.D. in chemistry. Before coming to Bridgewater, Joe would have never imagined himself researching synthetic compounds and the methods that brought them into being, but he wouldn't have it any other way.
When Joe started at BSU, he immediately took to his organic chemistry course where his future life came into existence. In the Math and Science Center labs, he developed skills that would lead him toward his scholarly pursuits.
During one summer, the young researcher was able to forgo a job and spend eight hours a day in the lab because of our undergraduate research program. The summer grant from the research program gave Joe the chance to compete with other students across the country and, ultimately, transformed his education.
"Yale wasn’t really in my plans," he says. "I never imagined anything like this happening."
