Khakatay means laughing out loud in Senegal, West Africa. Khakatay performs
traditional repertoire, mainly from the West African countries of Guinea,
Senegal, Mali, and the Ivory Coast. Traditional rhythms used for various
festivities, social occasions, and ceremonies constitute the body of Khakatay's
performing material. However, the ensemble continually seeks to move in new
directions as well, by incorporating instruments and stylistic elements from
various parts of the world.
The African Drumming Ensemble introduces students to some of the intrinsic elements of African music through the process of actual music making. It provides students with a firm foundation in West African djembe ensemble playing along with some of its associated traditional repertoire.
