Eric Alexander of the University of Wisconsin will present "Digital Shakespeare" on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m. in Maxwell Library's Heritage Room. The computer science expert will focus on the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Visualizing English Project, "Serendip," designed to unlock insight in early modern literature. With hundreds of thousands of documents forming the corpora of interest, researchers cannot always rely on familiar methods of close reading to perform broad analysis. Alexander will present statistics-based tools built to help researchers, specifically trying to supplement statistical evidence of high-level trends with low-level textual evidence. One statistical method employed is problematic modeling, which forms the backbone of the Serendip.
