"War & Peace: Illusions We Comfort Ourselves With" is the topic of the next John Quincy Adams Distinguished Speaker Series featuring Padraig O'Malley on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Maxwell Library's Heritage Room. O'Malley, the John Joseph Moakley Distinguished Professor of Peace and Reconcilation at the University of Massachusetts Boston, is the first Adams speaker of the 2013-14 academic year. His career as a peacemaker began in 1975 when he brought people from all parties to the conflict in Northern Ireland to the University of Massachusetts Amherst and has grown to include numerous countries and regions of the world divided by conflict. He helped to facilitate the Anglo Irish Agreement in 1985, Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and Helsinki Agreement in 2008. Based on his philosophy that cultures in conflict are in the best position to help other cultures in conflict, O'Malley created the Forum for Cities in Transition from Conflict in 2010. Three annual conferences have resulted in more than 70 agreements. The event is open to the Bridgewater State University community and the public.
