President [b]Dana Mohler-Faria[/b] has been honored with a Champions of Freedom Award. The awards are given annually to outstanding individuals and nonprofit corporations in recognition of their commitments to diversity, educational achievement, community development and philanthropy that touch the lives of area residents.[br][br]The president was one of nine recipients of the Ellen S. Jackson Award for Excellence in Education.[br][br]"Dr. Mohler-Faria was chosen in honor of his leadership in ensuring that young people have an outstanding college education, are ready to graduate and have the ability to thrive in today's economy," said Marie Hovis of Freedom House.[br][br]The ceremony was held at Boston's Omni Parker House and presided over by honorary chair, Gov. Deval Patrick.[br][br]The award is named for Ellen S. Jackson, a lifelong civil rights activist and former Freedom House staff member who led its Institute on Schools. She founded a predecessor to METCO, Operation Exodus, an inner-city program that bused students to less-crowded schools.[br]Freedom House is a community-based, social action agency founded in 1949 and located in Boston.[br](Story by John Winters, G'11, University Advancement)[br]
