On Monday, Nov. 5, in the Moakley Center auditorium, Noube Rateau, '10, owner of Noube Productions, is presenting “Step up,” a documentary about the increase in broken homes and cases of father abandonment in today's society.
This is Mr. Rateau’s eighth film. As with his previous documentaries, Mr. Rateau seeks to highlight an important social issue in hopes it will educate the public and inspire change. The film focuses on the long-lasting problems for children who grow up without fathers.

“For the last 20-30 years fatherhood has become an issue in this country, an issue that we have gone to great lengths to avoid,” said Mr. Rateau. “The purpose of this documentary is to expose why there are not enough fathers around in society.”

“Step Up” examines problems, results and solutions relating to fatherhood. The first part features interviews with single mothers who discuss struggles and the problems they face as the sole provider for their families. Then the results of a broken home are exposed, revealing how children are affected by not having a father figure in their lives. Finally, the focus turns to possible resolutions, while praising fathers that have taken responsibility for their families.

To find inspiration for his documentaries, Mr. Rateau looks at timely social issues relevant to the viewers. One of his first documentaries, “Sunset,” was about relationships and another was about drug abuse.

The young filmmaker’s love for the media began at age 13, when he became a reporter covering Brockton sports. He continued in sports broadcasting and reporting while at Brockton High School and at Curry College. It wasn’t until he transferred to BSU when he discovered making documentaries was his true passion. “Documentaries gave me the challenge that I needed,” he said. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the film runs from 7-8:30 p.m.
