Those responsible for making the Bridge Partnership a reality were shown the gratitude of President Dana Mohler-Faria Thursday night, at a dinner held in their honor.
The partnership is a13-day summer academic program developed by the president to give New Bedford's Roosevelt Middle School students a chance to see what college life is all about. Throughout July, the 150 youngsters lived in a university residence hall, took day and evening courses led by BSU faculty members, Roosevelt teachers and Bridgewater students, and toured educational, cultural and historic sites in Boston and southeastern Massachusetts.
Dr. Mohler-Faria called the partnership an outstanding program and nothing less than transformative for the Roosevelt students.
"It really made a difference to so many young people," he said. "These are the kinds of activities we engage in to change the world, one kid at a time."
Frederick Clark, executive vice president and vice president for external affairs called the partnership a "wonderful program," adding, "We created something from nothing in just a few short weeks. It was a remarkable achievement."
The guests included the BSU faculty and students who led the courses, and administrators who facilitated the program, as well as Roosevelt teachers and administrators and others.
Darcy Fernandes, Roosevelt's principal, was on hand and, along with President Mohler-Faria, was presented with several gifts. She said she's since spoken to several of her students about the program and found some amazing results.
"You really are influencing these children," she said. "I am amazed by the work BSU does."
The president concluded his thank you address by announcing that the Board of Higher Education had granted the Bridge Partnership $197,000 to continue the program next summer.
"Keep doing it," he said. (Story and photos by John Winters, G '11, Office of University Advancement)
