President Dana Mohler-Faria and Dr. Lisa Battaglino, dean of the College of Education and Allied Studies, led a contingent of a dozen students to Belize to continue the institution’s long-standing commitment to the Central American nation.

“It was a genuine privilege for me to see first-hand the kind of work in improving schools that she and BSU students have been doing there over the past seven years,” the president said.

Down Syndrome

Dr. Catherine Bearce Nowak, clinical director of The Feingold Center, Division of Genetics, at Boston's Children's Hospital, will be the featured speaker at the Children's Physical Developmental Clinic's Spring Speaker Series on Saturday, March 1. Her topic is "Physical and Motor Characteristics of Children with Down Syndrome" and will begin at 8 a.m. in Room 120 of the Center for Science & Mathematics at Bridgewater State University.

Theater and dance at Bridgewater State University presents, as part of its annual BAM! Student Festival, "Star Spangled Girl," a political-romantic comedy about two best friend pitted against each other in a love triangle that spirals out of hand. Written by Neil Simon and directed by Danni Vitorino, the final performance is Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m. in the Rondileau Campus Center Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for students with ID, senior citizens, youth and military; $15 for the general public.

A mashup of three of Shakespeare's romantic plays, the dreamlike world of the mischievous Puck is adapted by Micaela Kluver and Corey Cadigan, and is directed by Kluver. A weekend performance has been scheduled for Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, "Star Spangled Girl" is a political-romantic comedy about two best friend pitted against each other in a love triangle that spirals out of hand.

The past week saw several Bears honored for their performances.

Junior forward Michael Lofton has been selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week. He shares the weekly honor along with senior forward Tom Poitras of Rivier University. Also, for the third time this season, Mr. Lofton was selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Fired Up

Noube Rateau, ’10, will bring his latest documentary, The Culture, to the Moakley Auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 6:30 p.m. The film looks at both sides of America’s ongoing debate about guns.

“It breaks down and investigates the environment, results, and motives of our gun culture,” Mr. Noube said. Specifically, The Culture focuses on firearms and their impact on urban neighborhoods.

Fulbright to Go

Dr. Deborah Nemko, associate professor of music, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to the Netherlands for 2014-15. She will spend the spring semester of 2015 living in Amsterdam, researching, performing, and teaching the suppressed and forgotten Dutch composers of World War II. She will be working with the Leo Smit Foundation as well as teaching at Utrecht Conservatory, which is part of Utrecht University.
