The 75th birthday of Seamus Heaney was celebrated in the auditorium of the Science and Mathematics Center, before an audience of 125 fans of the late Irish poet. The program was titled, “Celebrating Seamus Heaney: Old Friends, New Stories.”
If you see roving cameras around campus this week, don’t be concerned. However, you may want to get ready for your close up.
This week, the staff of the Rondileau Campus Center is hosting the seventh annual Campus MovieFest. This is a national independent filmmaking competition, which allows any BSU student to form a team and yell “action!”
Bridgewater State University will hold its 173rd Spring Commencement Convocation on Saturday, May 17, on the Boyden Quadrangle. Undergraduate majors from the College of Humanities & Social Sciences will receive their degrees during a ceremony that begins at 9:30 a.m. Degree recipients from the Ricciardi College of Business, College of Education & Allied Studies, and the Bartlett College of Science & Mathematics, will receive their bachelor's degrees at a ceremony that begins at 2:30 p.m. These ceremonies are ticketed events.
Bridgewater State University will hold its Ninth Annual Graduate Commencement Convocation on Wednesday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rondileau Campus Center Auditorium. Hundreds of students will receive graduate degrees including certificates of advanced graduate studies and master's degrees. This is a ticketed event. Tuesday marks the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, an event that deeply touched the region and the BSU community.
The Tsarnaev brothers allegedly set off two bombs targeting spectators of the city’s annual marathon race on April 15, 2013. The bombs, detonated near the finish line on Boylston Street, killed 3 people and injured an estimated 264 others. In the aftermath, an MIT police officer was killed, as well.
The spring Job and Internship Fair brought to campus 60 organizations, drawing approximately 400 students. The annual event connects those seeking employment with area companies and organizations with openings.

At the annual Employee Recognition Luncheon, Keri Powers, associate vice president for human resources, and President Dana Mohler-Faria offered congratulations to the a total of 40 faculty and staff who were recognized for 10 years of service. Meanwhile, 17 faculty and staff were honored for reaching their 20th anniversary at the institution.
In addition, Dr. Mohler-Faria and Ms. Powers presented DRIVE awards to the following people in these categories:
Geology major Erick Dalmolin, '14, recently traveled to Iceland as part of a study tour. The trip was part of a course taught by Dr. Richard Enright, with a focus on the physical environment of Iceland and the ways in which the people of Iceland managed to settle and prosper in a severe environment.
The eight-day trip took place over spring break. Erick captured some amazing sights in this video. Included are interviews with some of his fellow travelers.
Ret. Commodore Abdulateef Al-Muthim of the Royal Saudi Navy, and currently a columnist for Alyaum, a newspaper published in Saudi Arabia, was the featured speaker at the John Quincy Adams Foreign Affairs Distinguished Speaker Series, held in the Heritage Room of the Maxwell Library.
The lecture was sponsored y The Edward W. Minnock Center for International Engagement at Bridgewater and the university’s Center for Middle East Studies.
