Kevin DosSantos, a student from Canton High School in Connecticut, was in his element, as he was wheeling and dealing on the mock trading floor.

“I love the chaos,” he said.

The young man spoke during a quiet moment at the International Economic Summit, an all-day event for high and middle school students that was held at Patriot Place in Foxboro, and co-organized by Bridgewater State University’s Center for Economic Education.

Julie White-Patel, ’06, was featured on the Ellen show, where host Ellen DeGeneres highlighted the Quincy teacher’s generosity and dedication to her students.

In a video made at the Francis W. Parker Elementary School where she teaches first grade, Ms. White-Patel recounted how she spends her own money to equip her students with the instructional materials they need. When seated in studio with the host, Ms. White-Patel was in for a surprise or two. 

Young Scholars Show and Tell

The mid-year symposium hit another milestone this year, with more than 650 presenters. This is the highest number of presenters to take part in the annual event.

The symposium filled the Campus Center ballroom, and came on the heels of BSU being named a leader in undergraduate research by The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR).

New Directions in Scholarship

The Honors Program reached a milestone last month when Dr. Teresa King, director of the center, and a team of students were for the first time invited to participate in the National Collegiate Honors Council conference. This year’s event was held in Denver, and focused on ways to implement new ideas into honors programs.

Bittersweet Holiday Gathering

More than a dozen times President Dana Mohler-Faria has presided over the annual holiday luncheon. However, this one, he admits was different.

With his plans to step down in June, the president told a Tillinghast Dining Hall packed with faculty and staff, that preparing for this year’s luncheon gave him pause.

“It occurred to me that this will be a year filled with a lot of ‘lasts,’” he said.

The Pedro Pires Institute for Cape Verdean Studies presented Dr. Ricardo Rosa as part of its Amilcar Cabral lecture series.

Dr. Rosa’s lecture focused on a variety of topics, including the life and work of Mr. Cabral, a political leader from the island, as well as the counterculture, and Cape Verdean hip-hop. All of this he related back to education and life.

Dr. Kimberly Cabot Davis believes that increased exposure to African-American literature, film and music can have a positive effect on racial attitudes among whites in America. 

In her latest book, Beyond the White Negro: Empathy and Anti-Racist Reading (University of Illinois Press, July 2014), Dr. Davis reveals the results of studies conducted over the past eight years involving more than 300 people, from members of book clubs to her own students.  

A Step Ahead

A new dual-enrollment program allows a small group of Wareham High School students to take college-level classes at BSU.

The students, Ryan Bonfiglio, Victoria Weichel and Jeffrey Cifello, stopped by Boyden Hall to visit with President Dana Mohler-Faria and Frederick Clark Jr., executive vice president and vice president of external affairs.
