President addresses Joint House-Senate Committee on student costs

Members of the Massachusetts House and Senate Joint Committee on Higher Education’s Subcommittee on Student Loans and Debt came to campus to hear testimony about the problems of rising educational costs. Several college and university presidents, senior officers and students from throughout the southeastern Massachusetts region offered testimony.

Cyber Scholar

Fulbright scholar Dr. Katalin Parti is spending the academic year at the university, working with Dr. Elizabeth Englander, director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center (MARC).

A native of Hungary, she graduated from the University of Miskolc, pursued a legal career as a lawyer and prosecutor, and is presently a research fellow at the National Institute of Criminology in Budapest.

Four former outstanding student athletes, the basketball coach with the most wins in BSU history, a former director of athletics renowned for his ability to build a first-rate athletic program, and a sports writer for the region’s largest daily newspaper who has covered Bridgewater teams for more than thirty years were honored at the annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction and Banquet.

A new speaker series will feature a writer with deep local ties who is currently riding a wave of critical acclaim for his latest book.

Andre Dubus III will be the inaugural speaker of the Visiting Author Series, appearing on campus to discuss his latest work of fiction, Dirty Love, and much more. After a craft talk and Q and A session with faculty, staff and students, he will present a reading and book signing which is open to the public. The reading will be held Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Conant Auditorium in the Center for Science & Mathematics.

'Painted Alice'

"Painted Alice," an original, grown-up adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, will be staged Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. at the Rondileau Campus Center Auditorium. Presented by the Department of Theater and Dance at Bridgewater State University, "Painted Alice," was written by BSU graduate William Donnelly, who was awarded a Playwriting/New Theatre Works grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 2005. Directing the production is Dr. Suzanne Ramczyk, professor of theater and dance, who has directed numerous BSU productions.

Air Show

The aviation science program was showcased on a segment of the popular television show, Chronicle.
The program’s associate dean, David Price, spoke with host Anthony Everett, detailing all BSU has to offer students who want to work in the air or on the ground in an industry that’s always on the move.

Initially, Chronicle producers were interested in filming a segment about the flight simulator, which is located at BSU’s aviation training center in New Bedford. However, once they arrived decided to do a much broader piece.

The Next Stage

BSU Theater's fall musical, "Painted Alice," the world premiere by William Donnelly, '94, was chosen to be performed at the Region One Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival later this month.

The play was one of five productions chosen from the region, which encompasses all of New England and New York. Dr. Suzanne Ramczyk, theater professor and director of the play, said more than 20 BSU students are involved in the production.
