Under the direction of Dr. Carol Nicholeris, professor of music at BSU, the Bridgewater State University Alumni Chamber Choir performed a 25th Anniversary Celebration Spring Concert at the Central Square Congregational Church in Bridgewater. The group performed a selection of songs representing a wide selection of styles and traditions.

The 22-member choir includes both alumni of BSU and residents of the community.

Full Circle

Keith March-Mistler, ’07, has come full circle in the field of education. 

As a student at BSU, he worked as an orientation leader, before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in art with a concentration in graphic design.

She Rules

Ever since Janell Burley Hofmann, '01,made her son sign a contract in order for him to have his own iPhone, the Cape Cod mother of five has started something of a revolution. 

The 18 rules in the contract included guidelines for parenting, but also basic tenets for civilized living in our technological age, including respecting others, taking responsibility and experiencing life fully.

The Muslim Students Association (MSA) is a small organization with big plans. 

The group hopes to expand its ranks, and even non-Muslims can apply.

“Anyone can join, you don’t have to be a Muslim,” said Ghada Masri, ’16, public relations officer for the group, which was founded on the BSU campus a few years ago. Ms. Masri and Sharif Abdelal, ’15, president of MSA, renewed the group last semester.

Region on the Move

The annual Metro South Legislative Luncheon brought to campus several state and regional leaders to discuss recent developments.

Bill Morse, chairman of the board opened the event by sharing a new slogan he said summed up the afternoon’s significance, and he hoped everyone would adopt, “When Metro South is home everything’s within reach.”

BSU President Dana Mohler-Faria echoed that sentiment with his opening remarks.

Into Focus

Dr. Bjorn Ingvoldstad, associate professor of communication studies, has been awarded a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. scholar grant that will fund a trip to Lithuania. He will spend the spring semester teaching courses on cinema and media studies at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city. 

Passover Celebrated

This year’s annual campus celebration of Passover was held in the wake of a horrific crime. Three people were murdered at Jewish centers in the Kansas city area, allegedly by a man with a long history of anti-Semitic behavior.

This made the event, held in Council Chambers in the RCC to commemorate the coming out of bondage for Jews around the world, especially powerful. The event was marked by education, a sense of community and the breaking of bread.

The anthropology department held its ninth annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, featuring five student presentations and the presentation of the Horner Awards.

The presenters and their topics were:

The second installment of BSU’s Visiting Author Series brought to campus Dinaw Mengestu, whose latest novel, All Our Names is one of the notable books of the year. The award-winning novelist and journalist spent the afternoon discussing the craft of writing fiction and later signing books.

Mr. Mengestu is the recipient of the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 award, The New Yorker’s 20 Under 40 award, and a 2012 MacArthur Foundation genius grant winner.
